To the organizers of the Sorrento Cheese Italian Heritage Festival, the annual summer event is about more than just sausage, cannolis and spaghetti.
As the festival's name implies, it is about the city's deep Italian heritage.
The festival is one of the largest of the summer, attracting more than 500,000 people during a four-day run that ends July 16.
Besides the 110 vendors who will be on Hertel Avenue, between Colvin Boulevard and Delaware Avenue, the festival will have a decidedly Old World feeling this year. There is an interactive exhibit highlighting some of Leonardo da Vinci's creations. There also will be greeters from one of Buffalo's sister cities, Torremaggiore, Italy, and entertainers such as Tony Galla and former "Saturday Night Live" comic Joe Piscopo.
