Lawmakers mulling temporary tax to finance highway trust fund
WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of House and Senate lawmakers will propose a temporary tax to keep the federal Highway Trust Fund afloat through the end of the calendar year, according to the chairman of a key House committee.
"We are not going to raise gas taxes,'' Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, told reporters Thursday at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.
Congress needs to act before the end of May, when the current highway and transit bill expires.
