Genealogy .. Searching for lost relative who was a Storekeeper

1950 Directory lists William C Bates as a storekeeper who lived with his wife Hazel at h743 Elmwood Ave in Buffalo. He was my great uncle and is a roadblock in my research.
I have no idea when he passed away and there are no Social Security records as he was born in Canada and didn't become a US Citizen. I am hoping someone on here remembers him or where his Gas Station/ Store was located. He had 2 daughters Shirley Bates Guest and Sharon Bates Hershberger and a step son Wilmer H Bombarger. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

In the 1940 census Texas is listed as his birthplace.

Oh how awesome!! That is him!! I know it said he was born in Texas but that was incorrect. I have his birth notice in Canada. He was a secretive man. I wonder when he died? Thank You so much for posting this!

Any ideas on where to search for a death? I have tried Ancestry.com and Find a Grave. Also looked into a few of your local funeral homes. I have not found a Social Security record but I assume he never became a US citizen and wasn't eligible.

It appears he and his wife Hazel owned 52 Leonard Street in Buffalo. The owner history is:

    Owner Book-Page/Date
    MILLIGAN HARRY F & W 7186-95 * 12/8/1965 *
    BATES WILLIAM C & HAZEL V 8845-385 * 10/25/1979 *
    BATES HAZEL V 10173-658 * 5/18/1990 *
    BATES TRUST 10217-284 * 9/20/1990 *
    DIGGS LARRY W & SHEILA J 10328-317 * 9/13/1991 *

Looks like his wife Hazel died in 1991:

    Name: Hazel V. Bates
    Birth: 30 Oct 1907
Death: Feb 1991 - Buffalo, Erie, New York, USA
    Civil: New York

There's a William C Bates listed as a plaintiff living at 85 Howard Ln, Tonawanda, NY on January 28, 1992. Don't know if it's the same William C Bates. The present owner of the residence at 85 Howard is a Kathleen M Bates.
