random favorite things about western New york

so we cant keep any single good point thread going each of you must have a few reasons to still be here.
I love the rolling hills and trees. flat land like Kansas is boring. my favorite place is in the woods. behind my house. just walking alone watching animals and looking at the trees. some how the air feels fresher in the woods. and my mind is more relaxed.
extreme heat and cold bothers me. I tried the south even for short visits 100 degrees is just too much. coll weather with out hurricanes or tornadoes suits me.
I used to say my friends and family were here but many of them have gone to the carolinas. now I have to admit I just feel real comfortable with my home and neighborhood. Hidden water falls, ponds way back in the fields, trout streams, favorite walking trails each of you must have some reason for being here, maybe its the small city culture of downtown. or the arts
just tell us what you like so much that you have not moved away
Chestnut Ridge Park is close to home and returning to nature more and more every day. walking there is my biggest pleasure.

Its sense of stability and safety. The crime rate, even in Buffalo, is worlds lower than our hometown, Los Angeles. And WNY is a lot less transient. Plus, it's green, green, green. I love that!

It's easy to become successful in WNY if yoiu stay in Western New York. I have had jobs in my field literally fall into my lap. Here is why:

If you have a degree in a certain area and if you have a decent amount of a work ethic and determination it's very easy to find a job.

    Why?

Because after graduation all of the really "driven" and over determined students take off for New York, Boston, Washington, Seattle or some other big city because they want more money and they complain that "there are no jobs in Buffalo." Therefore the rest of us who graduate with the same degree and who choose to stay in Buffalo can easily pick up those WNY jobs that the other "driven" students simply didn't want because they wanted to get out of the area...

Sounds like a nasty thing to say, but I mean this in a good way.

I have picked up jobs easily simply because I stay in Buffalo.
I'm just here to make people laugh. And to confuse people. Oh, and to irritate people.

WNY has a quiet sense of pride in its history, a pride which is still building. The Erie Canal was the engineering marvel of its time and was instrumental in keeping a continental United States from splitting into regional countries. We are only beginning to appropriately recognize and celebrate it.

We have many historical societies which quietly extol the past. No commercialization or sensationalism, as in Tombstone or the Alamo.

Respect for where we came from gives us a solid foundation in choosing where we're headed to in the future.

WNY is a diamond in the rough...

...and if civic leaders would recognize this, they could finally stop wasting their time searching for the one magic bullet that will make the region work and capitalize on what already exists. We may be sitting on a gold mine. I'm willing to bet that we are.

Pleae don't bring up civic "leaders" any more. I had to work hard not to, as this will quickly degenerate into a thread about what lazy, thieving, connving morons they are.

    See, I did it already.

It was merely a reference; the topic still stands, no worries.

Noc you miss the point. What would all those ex government employees do? OH I know. They could go on the same government programs they just don't want to stop. If we started to shift as many state/county employees to the welfare system wouldn't it cost us less than keeping them employeed because we could at least get away from the pension cost increases and not pay them as much per unit?

I don't mean the employees we really need, I mean the employees we could do without.

Sometimes firing the magic bullet means eating one.

    Early retire...don't rehire.

    Volition attrition.
