College Grad Can't Find Job, Wants $$$ Back

Seriously....WTF is the matter with some people?
College Grad Can't Find Job, Wants $$$ Back
She went to college to boost her chances of finding a great job once she got out of school, but now that that hasn't happened, Trina Thompson wants her money back.
Thompson, a graduate of Monroe College, is suing her school for the $70,000 she spent on tuition because she hasn't found solid employment since receiving her bachelor's degree in April, according to a published report.
The business-oriented school in the Bronx didn't do enough to help her find a job, Thompson alleges, so she wants a refund. The college says it does plenty for grads.
The 27-year-old information-technology student accuses the school's Office of Career Advancement for not living up to its end of the deal and offering her the leads and employment advice it promised, according to The New York Post.
"They have not tried hard enough to help me," the beleaguered Bronx resident wrote in her lawsuit, filed July 24 in Bronx Supreme Court.
Thompson's mother is proud of her daughter for completing her college education, but acknowledges Trina is upset that all her high hopes haven't panned out.
The mother and daughter live together, but Trina's mother, Carol, is a substitute teacher and the only one of the two who makes any money. They're barely scraping enough together to get by, reports the Post.
On top of her unemployment woes, Trina now faces mounting debt from student loans.
"This is not the way we want to live our life," her mom told the paper. "This is not what we planned."
Monroe defends its career-advice programs and is adamant that its staff assists young professionals in their careers.
"The lawsuit is completely without merit," school spokesman Gary Axelbank told the Post. "The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration."
On the school's Web site, the career program boasts that it provides free services for graduates at any point in their lives.

It's a legit college accredited by the Middle States Association, not a trade schoo. With that high a tuition, I thought it might be something like DeVry or one of those type. A lot of times, degrees from those colleges aren't worth all that much.

According to Monroe's website, tuition is around $ 5,400 a semester, which would be around $11,000 a year. That's $44,000 in tuition for 4 years not $70,000. Even if there was another $2000 in fees a year tacked on to the tuition, it would be about $52,000 ... far short what she alleges.

I don't believe any college "guarantees" any student a job upon graduation.

Who knows...she is 27. Maybe she took 10 years to get a degree.

Sadly, a degree in IT is not worth much these days. Most technical degrees aren't. The reason is, these jobs do not really offer "on the job training" like other industries. Companies like to hire someone who knows what they are doing from the get go.

What happens is someone gets a degree like this and then has to work their way up the ladder. By the time they get the skills in place, the stuff they learned in school is out of date, if it wasn't already.

What I like most is the fact that not only is this person going to lose the case but she pretty much ensured that NOBODY is going to hire her. A google search of her name is going to point every possible employer to this information. She screwed herself.

I saw on HLN this morning that she had a GPA of around 2.7+, which is C work. Not very impressive, especially in a job market where employers can hire IT majors with 3.2+ and up GPAs with internship experience and glowing employment references.

From an "adult learner", I'd expect better. I was a 3.4+ GPA student as an undergrad, but I was a kid who slacked alot (I was addicted to pinochle). When I went back to college years later to pick up computer courses, I was driven to do well even though I was working a full-time job. This has been my experience with all the adults I know who went/go back to college -- they take college much more seriously, so they're much better students than most of the 18-21-year-olds with whom they share classes even if they've been out of school for 20+ years.

She's clearly an idiot. Now her name is out there showing what an entitled brat she is. That'll definitely help with the job search! Nevermind there's people out there with experience who are being laid off. She expects to be hired over them!

Sad part is she will probably win the suit.

Especially if she is black. The race card WILL be thrown out there.

    This is nuts!

How can a university like Ohio State ever guarentee a job to all 50,000 students?

People will sue for anything these days.

Would the justice system work any better if they abolished all lawyers?

Only issue is mis-leading "advertising". WHen you see schools advertising "come to us" and be a computer repair technician or programming. Blau blau blau.. Yes there are openings but the ads would make it sound like your gonna get a job if you take these courses.

    You make your own breaks!

I'm betting she loses the lawsuit,

How many people here think that most Universities/colleges really give a damn about anything other than filling class size and curriculum ?

and how much has she done to get a job?
gone to the college's job placement office?
worked with the college's career councilors?
    had her resume critiqued?
    gotten any certifications?
is she aiming too high and not willing to take an entry level spot like a helpdesk position?
