The IRS has eliminated it's TeleFile program where one could call an 800 number and complete a basic 1040EZ type return by phone. They are now promoting online filing and in cases of Adjusted Gross Income of less than $50,000 (single $100,000 joint) it can even be done for for free!

My problem with this is it cannot be done directly to the IRS. You must use a third party. With today's heightened concern over fraud and identity theft does anybody else agree this should be a cause of concern. Not only will people be giving out SSNs but income levels, places of employment, number of and names of dependents, etc..

Isn't it bad enough we've created an entire industy so we can pay for the privledge of VOLUNTARILY filing our tax returns?

NYS seems to have taken a differant tack. My NYS Tax book came this year and I nearly mistook it for the latest Sears catalogue. Over 120 pages. I believe I fill less than ten lines on the form. What a waste.
