What to Include in a "candidate code of ethics"

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would be honored if you could take a moment and post up the one item you would include in a "candidates code of ethics", a morally bound code of ethics to which WE the voters of New York will hold all our elected representatives.

Please try and keep it short, sound byte material. Give us your most salient, but you certainly can "list" them if you'll be kind enough to take the time.

And remember, we specify ETHICS, not MORALS.

    Thank you again.

(This is like naming your kid, the both of us make a list and we make a final selection to see where they match!)

We, the citizens of New York, propose a Code of Ethics to which we require our elected representatives, and all candidates for public office, to adopt and ahere to. And in this Code of Ethics, we propose the following...

You can not except monies from any person who makes more than $200K a year, no buisiness or PAC's either!

You can not cut a program like STAR during the Budget Process, than a week later promise you will tax another group to pay for it.

You can not hire anyone for any job without putting out an open hiring and have it approved by and indep group.

You must accept a specified term limit and not run for any other office during your term.

You must create/enforce term limits for all elected positions below you.

you can not claim you will create 200K jobs during one of the largest economic growth periods in history and then blame it on someone else when you can't deliver!.

You cannot change political affiliations during your term of office.

I kind of agree with this one. You take money from whichever party to get elected, and some people vote because they agree with the party you said you would represent. You want to change parties, then you have to wait until you're up for re-election and explain why to the voters.

Candidate will not divulge any information deemed as confidential or detrimental to government.

Candidate will not use any government information that is confidential for purposes of making personal profits.

Expose to proper sources any corruption or wrongdoing if discovered

Will not in engage in promising government employment positions or granting favors and will provide equal opportunity for any government position available.

Candidate will commit to reviewing tasks of any office or department of responsibility to determine if there are any more efficient or cost effective means of completing operations within first year of office.

The candidate will outline all campaign promises (after election) and follow through with quarterly updates until such time the promises are passed and/or completed.

A political candidate will in no way interfere or encourage a voter to use absentee ballots for reasons other than their intent ( we had a huge problem in our town over this matter).

Elected officials should take a vow to follow the agenda of those they represent, not their own personal agendas.

Oh yeah cookie, we defintely require a "mission statement" from our candidates.

I don't know about the change of party affiliation, as we Whigs are outside looking in right now.

Here's what our compatriots in FLA came up with:

Honestly, I think it would be cool for say Mike R to have a web site that says, this is what the next bill is on, how should i vote?

I mean everyone has the interent and could go to the web site to read up on the bills and express how they think their reps should vote!

    Thats a neat idea.

Plus, you know only the ENGLISH SPEAKING voters could participate. Imagine that!

Sorry, its a pet peeve of mine. If you can ta speaka da language, you canna vote. English was not my first language, so reserve your "prejudice" comments for someone who might deserve them.

Heh. Ethics in politics. And I got a Bass Pro/Casino to sell you.

Ethics in politics is like a solemn prayer before a lap dance.

Like the wise Mr. Barnum said, "a sucker born every minute."
One beautiful thing about having a government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations is that every disaster is measured in terms of economic loss. It's sort of like getting your arm sheared off in a car accident and thinking, "Damn, now it'll take longer to fold the laundry" as blood spurts from your arteries. - The Rude Pundit

I wouldn't disparage honest working girls in the same sentence as politicians, however your abject cynisim is duly noted.
