Death Toll Not as high as predicted by Mayor

We have been told the death toll could be as high as 10,000 to 20,000. Procliamed by the Mayor of NO, Governor of LA and most news medias.

Baton Rouge - The official death toll from Hurricane Katrina in and around New Orleans rose to 197 on Sunday, bringing the total number of confirmed victims of the killer storm to at least 424.

Where these totals exaggerated to embarrass President Bush?
All the BS about slow response by the Fed and the uncaring by the president.

FEMA showed up in 3 days to the Katrina disaster. It took 4 days to show up for Hugo in Florida.
The numbers will show when all said and done that the Fed. operated as quickly, more so comparatively, as possible and the death toll will not even be in the top ten of disasters in the U.S.

The Dems on display taking advantage of the suffering for political advantage. Disgusting!

Not unless his own people want him humiliated:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said Sunday the death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is in the thousands, the first time a federal official has acknowledged what many had feared.

Leavitt said he couldn't provide a precise number on the impact of the devastation, but when asked if it was in the thousands, he told CNN's "Late Edition," "I think it's evident it's in the thousands."

Bush was there too, let's not forget, and was as shocked as everyone else:

"It's worse than imaginable," the president said after walking through a battered neighborhood in Biloxi, Miss. He warned of gasoline supply problems this weekend because of damaged refineries and pipelines.

"I'm not looking forward to this trip," Bush said as he toured Alabama and Mississippi and headed for Louisiana. "It's as if the entire Gulf Coast were obliterated by the worst kind of weapon you can imagine," he said.

Why not just be thankful that the death toll probably won't be as bad as first thought, and put aside the blame game for once?

The problem is not when FEMA showed up; it's what they did when they got there--obstruct numerous relief efforts. I predicted this would happen--based on what they've done in the past.

By the way--Brown resigned about an hour ago.

As for exaggeration, it's to scare people, because the more people are scared, the more power the government gets.

Everytime they describe that water, it gets worse.

I agree re: FEMA. I'm not sure the high death toll predicted was a scare tactic. Could be. Could also be officials themselves were scared witless (so to speak) and based their estimates on gut instinct.

It's evident now that none of the officials there -- including FEMA -- had any experience with disasters. Could be they naturally over-estimated as a result.

This is what happens when you appoint people based on who they know versus what they know.

Happens all the time, in both public and private sectors. But really -- you'd think an agency as crucial as FEMA would be an exception. Surely there was a white middle aged Bush-ite out there who had some emergency response experience.

I dont care, lets just be grateful that so many people are alive and well

I dont care so much about the estimates....because eventually the numbers come in and with better information estimates get revised....until the final numbers are posted.

Im just glad that so many people are alive, safe and having their needs tended too so that they can move on from this disaster
