Select few will benefit from charter schools

    From the buffalo news....

    <<<
I'm writing in response to the Aug. 12 News article about charter schools in Buffalo. Unfortunately, while they are a good alternative to public schools, financially they are like leeches that slowly bleed money out of the education system. Most people in the area are well aware that Buffalo is in dire financial straits and does not have adequate funding to pay for its schools. In this sense, opening charter schools that cater to the needs of the few at the expense of many just does not make sense.
Many children in Buffalo are from poor families. They need to be given every opportunity possible so that they may one day become productive adults who contribute to their community. Unfortunately, there are many families whose kids will never get the extra advantage that is offered by the charter schools because of ignorance, apathy or failure to gain admission. We need to look out for the kids who fall through the cracks. They are all part of Buffalo's future. Giving all of our children a decent education is one way that we can make sure that these kids get put on the path out of poverty.

If our economic situation were different, I would support the idea of charter schools. But right now, we cannot afford to drain the education system of money in order to cater to a select few.

This guy sure does do a good job scaring people. "select few" and "leeches"??? please. This guy is a Buffalo Teachers Union plant for sure. Can't have anything threatening the labor monopoly! That might result in CHANGE! And, that must be avoided at all costs.....

I'm writing from West Seneca and found this website in a search of WNY news. Lucky for me, I suppose, this looks like a great place to learn from what other pepole are saying.

I'd like to respond by saying charter schools are benificial to the main topic - children's education. I have three in a charter school because the Buffalo public schools (from a few years back) have basically let my children down...educationally speaking. Imo, the real leeches are the board members that have sucked the Buffalo Education system dry with pay raises and misc spending. Parents now have a choice and I encourage charter as a fundimental means to learning.

I wonder how the writer can say charter schools (financially) are like leeches that slowly bleed money out of the education system when Charters don't use any funds from the Buffalo Board of Education. If anything, the public schools should sit up, pay attention and learn a little something from the Charters otherwise there won't be any public school system left in Buffalo.

I guess while I'm here I'll look are a little bit.

I agree with Unregistered from WS,

the charter schools are picking up where the public schools leave off. And now the public schools are complaining because their enrollment count is down year after year.

Kind of seems like blaming someone else for all the things they've (the BB of E) done wrong.

Took my daughter out of catholic school to put her in one. My cousins kids can read and they are going into first and kindergarten. Now that is teaching.

I had a professor some years back that said there's no documentation speaking legally that says the government has any right to interfere in schools......or something like that, I forget the specifics.....maybe it was govt. funding.

Theres a lot of things the goverment is NOT supposed to be involved with. I think it was lincoln that said, goverment should only do what the community as a whole can't. Something like that.
