If I did, I can assure you I wouldn't report it.

I can't stand Duane Paddock and, therefore, can't stand seeing his name on a golf dome right around the corner from my house.

what is truly sad is that these cultural organizations do more with the SMALL amount of funding that they get from the gov't than most wasteful inefficient projects that the state or country run and the average citizen sees no benefit from.

People bitch about the zoo getting a million bucks a year. That's nothing in the grand scheme of things. The state wastes that amount of money in about 10 minutes on stupid things that nobody can even explain the rationale for.

I agree with steven. Go to the zoo; there are kids everywhere. It's really FOR kids. Ditto with the science center.

When newspapers in New York City are writing articles about Buffalo's cultural gems and how amazing it is that the region has so many cultural riches, you know you're onto something.

You don't get rid of your best assets to save an insignificant sliver of the budget. When they're gone, they're gone. Then you're left without some of your greatest treasures and all the same problems.

The problem with WNY in general is that so many people from there don't understand all the good things they have. There is a striking lack of pride there that I don't understand.

Having lived in Northern NY as well, it's the complete opposite here. People here think this place is god's gift to humanity and they take one battle from the war of 1812, a small college, a closed military base, and some pretty scenery and have convinced themselves that nobody else has riches like they have here.

I look at Buffalo, with all it has to offer, and wonder why people there spend all their time bitching about how awful it is and downplaying all the amazing things the area has to offer.

Every time I had a visitor in from out of town when I lived there, they were amazed at all the neat things, the vibe, and they enjoyed themselves a lot.

Funny how people not FROM Buffalo can see the perks that native Buffalonians ignore.

Talk to someone from the North Country, and they will tell you that you are about to visit a land of vast cultural and historical riches where manna rains down from heaven on this blessed land. Christ, read the newspaper up here and they brag about 50 jobs coming to town and how the future is bright and everyone could learn a thing or two from the sensible North Country ways. I'm not making this stuff up. LOL

Talk to someone from Buffalo, and they will tell you that it is a ****hole, it's ugly, and TAXES are a killer. They'd tell you to visit somewhere else because life there sucks.

It's sad. Until that mentality changes, the area will be stuck in a general malaise.

    You guys are silly.

I dont go to the mall.. EVER, therefor I want all my money back that goes to maintain all these county roads that led to strip malls.

If the county plows your municipality, I want my money back from the county I dont drive around in the burbs why should you?

If the Sherrife patrols your town or village I want my money back the sheriffe doesnt patrol in Buffalo.

If your walking through any of the numerous county or state funded parks I want my money back

It might be nice to think the goverment isnt footing part of the bill for something you use. But your just lying to yourself if you believe that.

No-one said anything about roads bridges, cops, garbage pick up or other Essential Services

This discussion is strictly about culturals. Personally I'm ok with them receiving funding, however when the money dries up, frankly it more important to have the roads plowed. There are plenty of people who donate to culturals, not as many who willfully donate to plow the roads.

Whats essential about a road that leds away from the urban core in an area that is less dense than most and losing population? We have more county roads then some small states.

There is nothing essential about roads leading to strip malls county parks or counting plowing. The county doesnt plow in Buffalo or Amherst ( not sure about Amherst) why do we have to pay full county taxes?

I didnt mention cops or garbage but since you did, why do I subsidize Grand Islands police force or any other town that has a high percentage of Sherrife patrols? I dont live on Grand Island and The Sherrife doesnt patrol Buffalo.

County roads are not essential they are there because some people dont want to live in the city. Thats not a necassity and it doesnt do anything to improve my quality of life. Yet my county tax dollars pay for it.

Sherrife patrols are paid for by everyone yet very few get the benifit of them.

Lets not forget the strip malls were ALL tax payer subsidized and even Dareien Lake and Fantasy Island recieved huge tax breaks. Fantasy Isaland just got one last year. Business routinly get tax breaks .... never happened any were I worked though.

So what gives? Were is my slice of all that money?

This is a straw man argument. Unless you live in a cave your getting or using something that is goverment subsidized that someone else doesnt use.

ok let me re-phrase since you obviously have a passion for the topic. none of the above relate to funding culturals. Using the but we fund this so that should go doesnt fly with me. If you want to discuss thecost of sprawl lets do that in a separate discussion.

    Its the same discussion.

    You cant say:

"the goverment should fund this because a few use it"

    and in the same breath:

"but not that because ONLY a few use it"

Think of it this way, If Erie county just wiped there slate clean we all moved out and were all moving back in tommorow and we got to start from scratch.

Would anyone go along with, "we will fund some roads and strips malls that only a few will use, in addition we will plow XXX streets But AAA has to pay for his own plowing and his own streets."

How many people would go for that?

Not many I am guessing and honestly in 20 years of Bopping around the world and country NY state is the only place I have seen stuff like this happening

Now how about "we will fund a zoo were everyone is welcome that will have educational programs for kids."

I am guessing the later would get more support.

Some people whine just to whine is my point (not you). Everyone gets a slice of free cheese wether they want to believe it or not

Buffalo would be a great place if it were not for the stupid voters and the over abundent number of public sector employees. This is the land of the stupid.

    EXACTLY!

Right out of the “give me my cheese playbook”, the 1st thing you hear is “what about……..” in attempt to deflect the discussion away from the real issue!!!!!!

The same goes for Trolls; let’s discuss each issue on its own merits. If you want to talk about waste somewhere else we can do that in another thread. To say, “we waste more money on (fill in the blank)” is not a way to defend your point of view.

This discussion started with Merl asking about the cutting of funds for various services.

It was stated by WTS that the culturals give children “hope and esteem and quality of life”.

It was stated by Steven that the culturals are quite busy with people patronizing these institutions.

What hasn’t been discussed is if these institutions are so popular why are they dependent on taxpayers subsidize?

If we are going to continue funding them where is the money going to come from? According to Patterson, we’re broke!!!!!!!

How much money are YOU willing to contribute to funding them? They accept donations; show us how much of YOUR money you’re throwing at it????

How much have you contributed to your plowing and sheriffe patrols? Or do you like your free cheese, REALLY free?

"Holy than thou playbook", good comeback

You better reach back in your pocket and grab a few more $20's, cause the funds are drying up!

I'll show you how much I've contributed to the sherrif's patrol and snow plowing as soon as the county gets done reprinting my tax bill!!!

    How soon we forget!

Maybe we should go back and remember this.....

    http://www.speakupwny.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37831

Wayyyyyyyyyy back last month when Patterson came out with his budget proposal!!! Remember all the additional taxes and user fee's?

Less than a month later we're right back to figuring out a way to spend again!
