Term limits for Cheektowaga limit voters choices

Angela Morton is proposing that the town board hold a public hearing about adopting an 8-year term limit.

At first blush, term limits sound like a good thing - move out the old and bring in the new.

But that is what elections are for, and local elections are the easiest for a new comer with little or no practical experience who isn't even a property owner to get elected.

Term limits in Cheektowaga will just disenfranchise the voters and limit our options.

Angela Morton won't need a term limit. The voters will give her one.

I think the Max machine disenfranchises the voters more than a term limit would. I'm all for term limits, clean out the deadwood and let some fresh ideas flow, who cares if their Dem or Rep. A couple of people sitting on the board should pack it in, one can't even answer questions anymore. It's very sad.

Term limits limit voters choices. why would anyone want to limit voters choices?

The losers always seem to want to limit voters choices in hopes of becoming winners.

Here's what Angela's proposal really says "The voters wanted Mary over Ted, so next time around we won't let Mary run to give Ted a chance."

That's how they run elections in Egypt. Maybe Ted and Angela should move there.

Term limits would let us have more choices, new people with new ideas. Every 2 years we're given the same slate of tired, worn out candidates who know that incumbents most always will win. Look at Rep Slaughter, 26 years in office, 82 years old, time to pack it in. But she will keep on winning as the party candidate in a gerrymandered district until she has one foot in the grave ( which she almost had last month)

First, Angela's proposal has nothing to do with congressional elections.

Second, every voter in Cheektowaga gets to vote for for every office - there are no districts to gerrymander.

Third, telling voters who they can't vote for limits voters' choices. If you can't understand that simple logic then perhaps you aren't a very informed voter.

Angela's proposal is nothing but a "help Ted the loser become a winner by eliminating opponents he can't beat."

It's the equivalent of proposing that the NFL limit coaches and quarterbacks to only 2 years of coaching and playing so that someone else will have a chance to win.

No kidding. Geez, Angela must have pee peed in your corn flakes for you to have such hatred toward her and her ideas. At least she's coming up with some new ideas, the other drones sit and sit week after week.

Not bashing anybody, just stating the facts. Appreciate the service, time to move along.

angela brings up a lot of good points in this law. might actually be a good idea i think the term limits are something worth looking into

A LOCAL LAW ESTABLISHING TERM LIMITS FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS IN THE TOWN OF CHEEKTOWAGA

    Section 1. Title

The title of this chapter shall be “Term Limits for Elected Officials in the Town of
    Cheektowaga”.

    Section 2. Legislative intent.

It is the intent of this legislation to broaden the opportunities for public service, prevent
nepotism and assure elected representatives are responsive to residents within the Town of
    Cheektowaga.

It is in the best interest of the taxpayer that if a citizen runs for public office, that he or she is
granted a fair opportunity to represent the Town. The implementation of terms limits offsets the
monopoly in which an elected official holds “the seat for life”. An unfair playing field is created
when incumbents who have served multiple terms are allowed to continue running for the
same seat with their opponent having the disadvantage. The newcomer has an unlikely chance
of overcoming the incumbent’s name recognition, political war chest and access to insider
information. This causes democracy in our Town to be compromised. The implementation of
terms limits will assure our government is empowered “by the people, for the people”.

As elected officials hold a seat for an extended period of time, the threat of nepotism greatly
increases. Jobs are given to a chosen few made up of friends and family of the long-time
standing official instead of citizens better qualified and willing to serve.

In a similar fashion, as elected officials hold a seat for an extended period of time, often they
become unresponsive to citizen needs and desires of whom they represent. A spirit of service is
replaced with a spirit of entitlement.

We need citizen representatives and not career politicians serving the Town of Cheektowaga. In
short, if a term limit makes sense for the President of the United States, it makes sense for our
    Town.
