We were in the thick of the October Surprise!
Speaking of surprise, I'm surprised no one posted about this before I did.

Living on the first park in Buffalo, I was really uptight as I heard the rustle and bang of the tree limbs throughout the night. Fortunately, many of the 100+ year-old oaks and chestnuts survived with little damage except for the limbs that should have been pruned before the storm. But the small ornamental pears, locusts, and cherrys came under intense fire from the heavy snow fall.
We went without power for five days due to a 400' cottonwood in my neighbor's yard bringing down the wires. It still thrives, though, albeit with a bit less limbs.
Funny note - I have wind brows on my truck and the one just above the driver side headlamp came off that day. It wasn't until I was re-installing it today that I realized it was the two-year anniversary of it's demise.
Within a few weeks I became a founding member of ReTree WNY -a better org you cannot find in Buffalo!
i was in the process of moving...power went out at 10 am.... my son and i went back to the old place for four days (power never went out) until the power came back on here....then continued the move...
October Surprise memories?
I forgot I needed electricity for my sump pump.
I let someone use my generator so their O2 machine worked and forgot about my sump pump. Surprize!
100's of buckets of water over the weekend until the power came back on. Couldn't have a lady sucking on a O2 tube with nothing coming out![]()

I racked-up, looting houses.![]()
Then there's the guy a couple of streets over - went from a "restoration house painter" to a lumberjack helping his neighbors, charging for his help and then taking any and all wood to his front yard and selling it for fire wood. Creep.
No power for six days.
Ate out a lot.
Froze my @$$ off.
Complained a lot.
Looked with fascination at the devastation
Looked in muted awe at my near-pitch black street at night
Cursed every store that was sold out of batteries
Listened to the radio a lot.
Cursed Buffalo's lousy weather every single day without power
Coincidence is the word we use when we can't see the levers and pulleys.

I'm no longer active with the group (health reasons) but fully support them - www.re-treewny.org - the full stories are there and a way to volunteer!
I was two months pregnant and had to eat canned chili by candlelight.
I'm just here to make people laugh. And to confuse people. Oh, and to irritate people.
I got up around 10pm to go to work and was surprised by the snow. By the time I got to the city I realized we were in trouble. Spent the night trying to reassure residents in city.
Then I had to dig my car out from under 4 ft snow in the morning, get it pulled out then make my way home again. Once home had to pick up branches and clear the driveway.
Luckily I heat with wood so my house was nice and toasty. No power but that was on late that night.
I did buy a generator though so I don't lose food in my fridge again![]()
