    What is a puppy mill?

    Hi all,

I'm Steve of Steve's Pets. I was told about the discussion here and was encouraged to respond. As you all might imagine I have strong feelings about this issue. I thought it best to respond with several posts.

What is a puppy mill and do we get our puppies from them.

Wikipdeia befines a puppy mill as:

Puppy mills (also known as puppy farms outside of the United States) are large-scale dog breeding facilities that operate under substandard breeding conditions,[1][2] causing the development of chronic health problems, temperament issues, and hereditary defects in puppies that come from the mills.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_farming)

I'd say that the real issue is the care of the parents and the puppies. For many, any breeder that breeds more than three litters a year is a puppy mill. For others anyone who breeds puppies without concern for the wll being the the animals would be a puppy mill.

I have been in this business for a long time and I am fully conversant with the issue of puppy mills; I was reluctant to carry puppies because it is very difficult to do well and we have tried to base our reputation on doing things well. Before we started selling puppies I took a trip with my veterinarian to meet breeders and brokers. My wife went to school at Medaille and became a vet tech. She then went and worked for the broker that we had met to see first hand what their procedures and practices are.

The broker is my screener. They have multiple vets on staff that work with the breeders to ensure that they follow proper protocals. They will not buy from puppy mills. Bad breeders produce bad dogs. It is not right either ethically or economically. We only but puppies from approved breeders. They have been examined several times by veterinarians before we receive them and they are examined here before they come out for sale. My wife and her dedicated animal care staff are meticiulus in taking the best care possible of our puppies.

So, I categorically deny that any of our puppies come from puppy mills. I've been there, I've met the brokers and breeders and I know. Those that make the generic claim that all puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills are just repeating what they have heard. From my expierience, none of them have ever been to a breeding facility. My wife and I put a lot into bringing the best puppies we can into our store. We are not cheap, we are getting great puppies but the screening process isn't cheap. I am proud of the puppies that we get and I find a deep satisfaction in providing people with great companion animals.

Thank you, Steve, for coming on and clarifying the "puppy mill" fallacy regarding your store.

You do seem sincere and now I would recommend to others interested in a puppy to check out your store.

Because Steve went out of his way to register, and answer the question, I am, certainly, not going to give him a hard time.

While he does seem sincere, I, still, would, strongly, advise anyone, who is thinking of buying a puppy, to not buy it at a pet store.

And, if Steve is really a pet lover, he would admit that as well.

BTW I have been to Steve's, and, puppies aside, it's a great store. However, because they sell puppies, I choose not to go back there.
