I use none of that stuff. If you really never install and removed lots of programs I don't believe there is a need to worry about that.

What are you seeing or experiencing that makes you think you need this?

I installed my new printer several months ago. HP. It's on the hard drive but not accessible to the computer. In other words I can use it but never download some important security updates. Seems that this particular printer has a driver problem with XP, and I can't uninstall the old stuff to download the newest driver.

BTW, I have a similar problem with Google Earth Beta 4.3.

HP talks about everything but never solves my problem. Sounds simple but I've spent many hours going through stuff and trying to resole this.

Is this attached to the computer by USB or Parallel cable?

    This does work

    Introduction
When a Universal Serial Bus (USB) driver installation is interrupted, subsequent installation attempts may fail. The computer will not detect the printer.
The scrubber utility, located on the installation CD, removes the files that are blocking the installation. The driver will install successfully after running the scrubber utility.
OPMERKING: Do not use the scrubber utility to uninstall the driver. Use it only when the USB installation is blocked because of an unsuccessful install attempt.

    Use the scrubber utility
Follow the instructions below to run the scrubber utility and install the USB driver.
OPMERKING: Do not connect the USB cable to the computer until a driver installation screen prompts you to.

Disconnect the USB cable connection from the printer to the computer.
Insert the installation CD that came with the printer.
Click Start, Run, and then Browse .
Browse to X:util\scrubber\uninstall.exe where "X" is the driver letter of your CD.
Double-click uninstaller.exe . The Delete Printer box is displayed.
Click Continue . A dialog box displays that asks you to wait while the printer is deleted.
The next dialog box reminds you to disconnect the cable between the printer and the computer. Click OK .
Shut down and restart the computer.
Click Start , and then Run .
Click Browse . Browse to the officejet driver folder.
Double-click setup.exe . Continue the installation following the on-screen instructions. Wait to connect the USB cable until prompted.

thanks everyone. I'll try your idea out, Jerry. Tonight. It's connected by USB.

Last night I did get into some insights on Adobe, which has Flash and shockwave. I think (?) Google Earth, too. I saw where I have old editions of Adobe, and I now have 7.0. I've been told to get rid of those. I can't see how to delete the old ones and I admit I'm afraid to erase them from the registry. I'm no geek, as you can tell, but I make my way around.

Have been in chats, telephone and online with HP, but they are really no help and I'm not sure how articulate I am.

    Thanks again.

I use Auslogics Speedboost. The tial won't clean anything, just show you what needs to be done.
It's not expensive, either, but it IS a great program
Let me articulate this for you:

    pricelessware.org is your friend!

This one rocks- try it out for free, at least long enough to fix the problems.
