What's wrong with setting the minimum amount of knowledge needed to advance to the next grade, telling teachers they are hired to teach kids that minimum, then testing the kids to see if they have learned what is required?

That's not "pressure" - it is their job.

If they became teachers so they could have 3 months off and a nice teacher's lounge to socialize in then they should be fired if their students don't measure up.
I wasn't thinking about at the college or almost professional level, that is different.

I do agree a certain amount of knowledge should assessed to see if the child is ready for the next grade level.

And I think if the teacher is sending kids who are obviously behind to the next grade level is not doing anyone any favors and the teachers should obviously be fired .

I like the way some of the schools are starting to do it, were if they are a head in every other area except one subject they just go with a special teacher or even a younger grade class in the one area they are behind in. They also do it with students who are advanced.

I think it's dumb to expect every kid to be at the same level just because of their age. But I do think these teachers should be fired, they are suppose to be ethical example for these children and clearly aren't.

We use standardized test to make those determinations. Teacher's teaching kids the knowledge we want those kids to have is exactly what teachers are supposed to do, especially in elementary and middle schools. Testing how well they are doing by standardized test is the most efficient way to make those determinations, at least until the teachers start changing the answers for the students.

That's my point.. the teachers are so concerned about the test that they are acting unethically and getting test anxiety. The test anxiety is getting passed down to the students.

It would be one thing if they were basing the assessments on progressive of individual instead of an overall achievement of all the students. They don't test the kids on their level and assess them based on how they did the year before. They look at it as an over all statistic and nothing more.

So it's not about the kids, it's about the teachers feeling "pressure" from the use of the results of the test.

What pressure. Here ya go teacher, here are the questions and the answers we want you to teach the kids.

how much simpler can we make it for them? geeezzz

Here is something I would find extremely interesting

We randomly take 100 teachers thoughout WNY.

They all take the same "end of the year test" that a teacher would prepare for the kids in their field. Think all the teachers would score 95 to 100% across the board?

Do they publish a course layout for like what a 1st grader needs to cover and 2nd, 3rd grades in the important topics like math, reading/english, science, basic wood/tool shop, home economics along with general knowledge..
