Councilman Hart suggested individuals provide a flash drive rather than a disk to avoid possible virus infection.
Maybe Hart thinks Aides and Ebola are transmitted by CD's but not by flash drivers.

A dvd cost less than 50 cents. The cost of disruption and cleaning up a computer virus would well exceed that. The town should not be using any media provided by a requester.

BTW - why didn't you file a FOIL request for the town's FOIL policy last year?

Supplying a new blank DVD/CD to burn data is fine. Supplying a flash drive unless new and sealed in the pack I would question.

Uh...how is the town going to know that the DVD/CD provided by a requester is new and blank and virus free? If someone wanted to mess with the town's computers all they would need to do is make a FOIL, claim they can't pay the extra 50 cents for the town to use its own DVD, and then put a keylogger or other invasive program that installs upon insertion of the dvd.

Resealing a flash drive in a retail package is also relatively easy.

For 50 freaking cents it ain't worth the risk.

moreover, because it is public information, the risk is even lower for all if the information is provided via email or if too large via a dropbox or google drive download.

There was no written policy. All FOIL requests were directed to the Town Attorney. Appeals of FOIL denials went to the Town Board who was advised by the Town Attorney. At least the newly adopted policy addresses this part of the issue, at least on its face.

Just giving best case if the end user was going to supply an item. Like a DVD versus flash drive.

Personally if I was the Supervisor I would just have the town supply a blank DVD. The cost is so minimal I don't know why any time would be wasted on this.

How many denials actually happen and why?

The property owner are basically the bosses and are paying for services rendered.

Not sure, but I do know there were denials. Here is one: http://www.buffalonews.com/city-regi...study-20140819
