Elma man assaulted getting out of vehicle

An Elma man was assaulted by a group of people when he got out of his vehicle in East Buffalo shortly after midnight Monday.

Edmund M. Zielinski, 42, had arrived at a friend’s home on Wyoming Street near East Delavan Avenue to drop off a lock.

Finding his friend not at home, Zielinski was approached by four to five men who tried to empty his pockets and punched him in the head, causing his dentures to fall out and break, Buffalo police said. The attackers also threw objects at Zielinski and then fled, police said.

In 1981, two KKK members in Alabama randomly selected a 19-year-old black man, Michael Donald, and murdered him, to retaliate for a jury's acquittal of a black man accused of murdering a police officer. The Klansmen were caught, prosecuted, and convicted. A $7 million judgment in a civil suit against the Klan bankrupted the local subgroup, the United Klans of America.

In 1998, Shawn Allen Berry, Lawrence Russel Brewer, and ex-convict John William King murdered James Byrd, Jr. in Jasper, Texas. Byrd was a 49-year-old father of three, who had accepted an early-morning ride home with the three men. The police report describes the suspects as 3 African American males in their Early to Mid 20's. One of the men is described at 5' 9 wearing a red shirt and baseball cap. The second man, is described as 5' 7 with a goatee wearing a white undershirt. There is no description of the 3rd man allegedly involved. All 3 men are thought to be involved in a brutal attack on Lisbon Avenue on New Year's Day.

Couple Attacked on Lisbon Avenue

Buffalo, NY (WKBW)- The search continues for several men who allegedly beat a man and his girlfriend on New Year's Day. Samuel Schwass of Amherst is still recovering from a fractured jaw, concussion, and several head lacerations. Schwass and his girlfriend Skye McClellan, say they had celebrated the New Year in Downtown Buffalo and had dropped off friends on Lisbon Avenue. The couple claim they walked into the house for a few minutes to say goodnight and when they left they were approached by 3 men.

"They asked where all the girls were," said McClellan. "I told them to leave us alone. That's when they started swearing. One of the them punched my boyfriend in the back of the head. My boyfriend now has two lacerations above his eye where his head hit the windshield. As he fell, the kid started kicking and stomping on his head and jaw."

McCellan was punched twice in the face. Schwass now has his jaw wired shut to help heal the 4 fractures in his jaw. The couple did not know their attackers.

"I thought when the kid hit him, I honestly thought my boyfriend was going to die," added McClellan. "Just the way he was stomping on his skull, it was so unnecessary."

Samuel Schwass's Mother, Anna believes the attack was gang related. The description in the police report also describes the beating as a gang assault.

"My goal is to raise awareness to the community," said Schwass. "I'm not even a city person, but this was way too close to home. It's one of those things that you think will never happen to you, but it did."

Eyewitness News has reached out to Buffalo Police Spokesperson Michael Degeorge, who says the police take every case very seriously, and will continue to investigate this one. Eyewitness news will continue to bring you the latest developments in this case.
