U.S. life expectancy may drop due to obesity

CHICAGO - U.S. life expectancy will fall dramatically in coming years because of obesity, a startling shift in a long-running trend toward longer lives, researchers contend in a report published Thursday.

By their calculations — disputed by skeptics as shaky and overly dire — within 50 years obesity likely will shorten the average life span of 77.6 years by at least two to five years. That’s more than the impact of cancer or heart disease, said lead author S. Jay Olshansky, a longevity researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This would reverse the mostly steady increase in American life expectancy that has occurred in the past two centuries and would have tremendous social and economic consequences that could even inadvertently help “save” Social Security, Olshansky and colleagues contend.

“We think today’s younger generation will have shorter and less healthy lives than their parents for the first time in modern history unless we intervene,” Olshansky said.

Already, the alarming rise in childhood obesity is fueling a new trend that has shaved four to nine months off the average U.S. life span, the researchers say.

With obesity affecting at least 15 percent of U.S. school-age children, “it’s not pie in the sky,” Olshansky said. “The children who are extremely obese are already here.”

The report appears in the New England Journal of Medicine. In an accompanying editorial, University of Pennsylvania demography expert Samuel H. Preston calls the projections “excessively gloomy.”

Opposing forecasts, projecting a continued increase in U.S. longevity, assume that obesity will continue to worsen, but also account for medical advances, Preston said.

Still, failure to curb obesity “could impede the improvements in longevity that are otherwise in store,” he said. Americans’ current life expectancy already trails more than 20 other developed countries.

    Sobering statistics
Dr. David Ludwig of Children’s Hospital Boston, a study co-author, cited sobering obesity statistics:

Two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese; one-third of adults qualify as obese.
Up to 30 percent of U.S. children are overweight, and childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 25 years.
Childhood diabetes has increased 10-fold in the past 20 years.
“It’s one thing for an adult of 45 or 55 to develop type 2 diabetes and then experience the life-threatening complications of that — kidney failure, heart attack, stroke — in their late 50s or 60s. But for a 4-year-old or 6-year-old who’s obese to develop Type 2 diabetes at 14 or 16” raises the possibility of devastating complications before reaching age 30, Ludwig said. “It’s really a staggering prospect.”

While national attention is starting to focus on contributors to obesity, including the prevalence of fast-food, soft drinks in schools and cuts in physical education classes, “what we presently lack is a clear, comprehensive national vision for addressing the obesity epidemic,” Ludwig said.

The calculations are a stark contrast with Social Security Administration forecasts for slow improvement in life expectancy, and with projections publicized in 2002 that said the maximum human life span will reach 100 in about six decades. In an interview, Olshansky said he hoped the new research would play a role in the current discussion about overhauling Social Security.

James Vaupel, director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, and a research scientist at Duke University, co-authored the 2002 forecast, based on data from developed nations including the United States.

Vaupel called the new report “very one-sided” and said he doubts that obesity will negate the effects of other medical progress in improving mortality.

Emory University health policy expert Dr. Kenneth Thorpe said that while obesity is clearly damaging public health and driving up health care spending, rising rates aren’t enough to resolve Social Security’s woes. “That’s too simplistic,” he said.

Other life expectancy forecasts rely on past mortality trends; the Olshansky group used obesity prevalence data and previously published estimates of years of life lost from obesity.

They calculated in reverse, assessing the fall in death rates that would occur if all obese Americans had a normal weight. Their estimate shows that, if not for obesity, life expectancy at birth should be four to nine months higher than the record 77.6 years announced by the government last month. That slight gain translates into a loss that will worsen if current trends continue, the researchers said.

Richard Suzman, a researcher at the National Institute on Aging, which helped fund the study, said the projections are “possible, but I would say unlikely.” He said the best approach is to estimate life expectancy using historical trends.

The Center for Consumer Freedom, an advocacy group for the restaurant and food industry, which argues the obesity problem has been exaggerated, said the paper should be discredited because co-author David Allison has done consulting for makers of weight-loss products.

Allison, a biostatistician at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, noted that the journal mentions his financial ties. While the study methods are partly based on assumptions, they are also sound, Allison said.

Obesity researcher Dr. JoAnn Manson said she agrees with the paper’s message, if not the methods.

“The calculations that were made may not be perfect,” but the emphasis on obesity’s dangers “should serve as a wake-up call for policy makers and the public health community,” said Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin said Wednesday that the report supports his efforts to have government regulation of junk food marketing to children.

If the dim life expectancy forecast doesn’t demonstrate a need for action, “I don’t know what will,” the Iowa Democrat said.

Isn't the theory of natural selection nullified by the intriduction of addictive non-food items that we call food and gorge ourselves on leading to the decline in life expectancy?

You have an excellent point, Hip Kat, but the Theory Of Natural Selection is "canceled out" when a species, or humans live in an artificial environment, or "modern society/civilization."

Same could be said for every animal living in a zoo or other "protective & controlled" environment.

There is NOTHING "natural" about the state in which most human beings live in.

Actually, if you factor in hunters, poachers, land development, wars ect into Primate populations living in the wild, the process of Natural Selection goe awry thanks to the "wisdom of the noble savage," or man.

If a huge segment of the U.S. population want to be walking Volkswagons;Bovine Americans dumb enough to get addicted to sh--ty foods and suffer the health problems for it?

    Problem solved.

Yeah. Sure. Like I should talk. Most of my life, all I ate was GARBAGE FOOD.

Its disgusting all the fat, sugar, salt & artificial ingredient laden crap most of us eat and yes, that includes pizza, wings, subs and hoagies!

The outstanding documentary "Supersize Me" speaks volumes.

ALL fast food both resturant and supermarket serve has HIGHLY ADDICTIVE INGREDIENTS, to make the consumer coming back again and again

Im fine with "natural selection" helping to keep some kind of balance in our processed materialistic civilization. But what I dont like is political policy engineered to basically "map out" someones life, and gouge them financially every step of the way.

"Natural Cures They Dont Want You To Know About" (book on CD) - was very interesting and sometimes funny too.

Basically, "our system" is just a corrupt machine designed to save/capture you and keep you enslaved until you cant be profitted from anymore.

I was lazy, got the first CD on tape and even took notes.
Yes, Trudeau sounds NUTS at times, but he makes so much sense while telling the reader how we've been "used" by the pharmaceuticals, fast food chains, our beloved government; The FDA & FTC, its kind of impossible to trust those who govern and oversee our lives and safety, respectively.

The obesity epidemic in the United States is a direct result of the cheap fast-food and the addictive ingredients in them.
Let's not forget the pop/soda, the candy, the baked goods, the greasy, salty, fried and sugar-drenched foods.

Oh and beer-Lots of it! That's really healthy too!

Trudeau's chain of logic is basically:

1-You get addicted to foods that are bad for your health
2-Your doctor puts on you meds to treat the conditions your diet brought on
3-The side-effects of your medications force your doctor to put you on MORE drugs

All the while you're STILL gorging on that food you just can't seem to give up while every damned medical chartiable association (American Cancer Society, professional association (AMA), the FDA and the major pharmaceuticals laugh as we march, hobble, crawl and finally roll (in wheelchairs) to our graves.

Oh, heh, and the diseases the American diet brings wherever it goes?
Cancer, Stroke, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's, Dementia,

Quarter pounder with that Quadruple bypass, sir?

    Yes.
It is "normal" to eat McDonald's and KFC. I read that the Ancient Egyptians ate fast food as did the American Indians who feasted on Arby's and Taco Bell while the old west pioneers had a Snickers to "satisfy that hunger."

When I see morbidly obese people, I feel terrible for them.
I myself still have to lose another 45 lbs, but watching these poor wobbling people, often on canes and walkers breaks my heart and do not expect any kind of "massive government reform" or grass roots health reform (govt would never allow it) to SUDDENLY care about the health of all Americans

The focal point of that post is the word "enslaved" because that's basically what we are.
Only it's not blacks owned by whites, it us owned by them, them being Government and Big business.
The masters today live in the REALLY big houses, and spend gobs on lobbyists that keep us frm knowing the truth about the poisons we eat, and the poisons we import form places like China, in the form af medicines that either cause other problems, become addictive or keep you alive enough to keep coming back for more.
Every commercial is designed to trigger a want in you for the product, most of which is garbage that's being pushed on the general public.

BTW, it's not the fat or the calories that make and keep people fat.
It's the artificial preservatives, hormones, chemicals, and colors that are not able to be digested that kills you.

My last job, there was a guy who was 27, was about 6' tall and weighed almost 800 lbs.
He blames it on a gland. Yet he eats McDonalds, every day for lunch, and good grief, don't even let anyone bring in donuts, or he'll devoure them.
Another guy, 5'9, 500 lbs, same diet, and a girl that was 6' and weighed about 360, same diet.

Dont forget, its not just the food, its the activity.

I saw a documentary on a tribe of south western native americans (sorry, forgot the name) whose lifestyle for many thousands of years was to run from village to village every day. And in a few short centuries (maybe only decades) after that natural activity (lifestyle) stopped, the people from that blood line blew up like balloons.

Im all for inovation and technology (reasonable conveniences), but if certain people choose to remain ignorant and/or non-active in what is naturally required by their own body to live healthy, then I say the hell with them! As far as the people who genetically inherit an obese nature, perhaps these people should step up to the plate and get sterilized before puberty.

I just ate a bag of twizzlers, but dont worry I wont be having any children. lol

You're totally correct. People who abuse knowingly abuse their bodies (and minds) basically DESERVE any infirmity;Diseases directly resulting from their excesses whether its from

    over-eating
eating poorly if Diabetes runs in the family or one ALREADY has type 2
    smoking,
    drinking
high saturated, sugar, salt fat diet with low fiber
    drugs

Honestly, I've seen too many morbidly obese people getting out of super-expensive cars wearing the very best clothes and jewelry meaning that they can AFFORD treatment;Personal trainers and programs to get them into better condition.

Of course all income classes below upper,, junk food, the "convenient" crap is far cheaper than the quality foods which make us feel better.

I'm not trying to pontificate;Speak down to ANYONE from a lecturn on the "evils" of over-eating.

I've yo-yo dieted for decades and FINALLY settled on a sensible routine I can stick to without forcing myself to eat right and I supplement (within reason), plus excercise and if one has years or DECADES of poor life habits, its hard as hell to break out of them.

I know how easy it is to eat out of depression, a sedentary lifestyle or habit, but if binge-eating is killing someone, they should change their diets,
otherwise, its chronic or slow suicide

Oh, the sweet and delicious irony of an Iowa democrat commenting on American obesity. What's next? George Bush buying a hybrid?

Soft drinks, hmm? I wonder what those are sweetened with? Maybe corn based snacks oughta get thrown in there too, Tommy-boy. I wonder how much subsidized f'ing CORN SYRUP comes out of Harkin's state? At least enough, evidently, to buy this clown off and get him re-elected.

Does anybody have any idea what the most frequently appearing ingredient is in American diets? Corn.

First the government lied about how adding ethanol will clean up emissions- it doesn't- but since ethanol has less energy, you gotta buy more gallons to travel the same distance. So, they get more tax money, now that the volume of gasoline sold goes up. This is like reassessing then saying the taxes didn't rise because the rate stayed the same.

Now they lie about how ethanol is renewable. The E85 loophole. The list goes on and on and on. And the schools have done such a bang-up job teaching physics and chemistry that Americans have been snowed into believing these lies too.

There's lots of emissions going on here, and they're landing in our pocketbooks. It's time to get the primaries out of farm states.

The point wasn't about who said it, but rather what he was saying...

Yeah, the ethanol thing is a crock.
I always wonder what life would be like if the government actually did look out for our best interests, told us the truth all the time and admitted when they were wrong...

I understand- the issue, though, is that people lately seem to have a big throbbing stiffie for nationalised health care.

    Well then.

The government, via junk science, is subsidizing obesity to the tune of about 300 calories a day, per resident. This is well past 10% of most people's daily needs. Not exactly what you'd want done by the very same waterheads attempting to run our health care system.

Let's agree to not hold our breath waiting for Hillary to decry the corn subsidy before the Iowa primary....

Sorry, I might have been unclear. Over 300 calories a day, on average, in the US is consumed as sugar. The vast majority of this is corn sweeteners.
