WIVB, WKBW, WGRZ and The Buffalo News...

Three plus one does not equal four solid sources of news.

Buffalo, NY is a mid-sized city with THREE local news stations but only one newspaper.

Of the three TV stations, Channel 4 has been rated the highest with channel 7 the lowest--ch. 7 is rated as "the least one" by other than us.

Each station needs to compete while make news reporting a full-time job, which gets in the way of concise news, like it or not. That happens all the time now!

There was a time when the news was delivered on TV "short, sweet and to the point". The commentators were not suppose to show any emotion or make a single personal comment. Just the facts, mam... Those days went byebye.

In order to hear all the news on one subject, we are baited to get to the TV at least three times each day! We make time to watch at one time but can't get "the rest of the story" without following the three-points trail every day!

SOLUTION???: Don't watch the TV at all. Find the station online after the final broadcast of a given day and get it all that way. NO, that won't work. Darn. We can't be glued to the TV or computer all day, 16/7 (with 8 hrs. sleep)...Hey! Wait! Following the news exclusively on the Net IS the best way to avoid seriously stupid commercials without wearing out the MUTE buttons!!!

I pretty much only watch Ch. 4 BECAUSE it sensationalizes news the best! That is NOT my positive commentary for Ch. 4 actually being the best though.

Sometimes watching the news can be fun. We laughed the day two commentators both pronounced a well-known area wrong without either one noticing and correcting themselves.

Those two, a well-known guy and gal, both appearing to be USA born, bred and educated, they both referred to Arkansas, a place we American citizens were taught how to pronounce in our early grade school days, as "are can zzis"!!! They didn't correct--they WERE in Kansas! haha

The Buffalo News is the only "major" paper within Buffalo both on and off the Internet. It is what rates "the least one".

    I don't watch TV. I don't have cable or satellite. I don't think I'm missing anything.

I do read the Buffalo News and don't think it's as bad as most people say it is.

Last night Channel 7 showed a 20 year old clip of the weather forcaster doing a song he wrote and then sung live with a local band. It went on to show Irv Weinstein rapping (on the b-side of the 45)--that's when I changed the channel. What a great 5 minute segment at 11:17!

The Buffalo News has really been pissing me off lately...

I think they are totally BIASED up the wazoo and their reporting seems to PANDER WAY TOO MUCH to special interest groups and/or close minded "elitist" groups... You know who I mean.

It's just subtle how they do it... Subtle... Like when they recently wrote the article about how the Elmwood Village is doing well and businesspeople from around the country are taking notice of it, they just haaaad to throw in the little, "Oh but we are CONCERNED *sniff* [emphasis mine] about how Children's Hospital is putting in a *sniff* parking lot..."

They also tend to be liberal in many ways. Don Esmonde, whom I used to like, has occasionally ticked me off with his "things would be so much better if Buffalo went back to the 1800's" schtick. Waaahahaaaa. I fear that when other people from other parts of the country read the Buffalo News that they are getting the wrong impression of us. The Buffalo News, being our only paper, kind of *unfortunately* serves as representative point of view of the whole city... In that case they make Buffalo seem like a backwards town full of self defeating whiners and close minded, short sighted fuddy duddies...

I wonder too WHY and HOW they choose the things to put in the City and Region "area briefs" sections. Why, I ask you, WHY does it really need to make the news every time someone from Clarence has their wallet stolen at a club on Chippewa? Or whenever a lady from Williamsville has her car broken into outside of Delaware Park? That kind of stuff shouldn't even be wasting ink ipaper... But someone on the editorial board must be deliberately choosing to print that stuff and I think they do it to be snarky and "ha ha" about it.
I'm just here to make people laugh. And to confuse people. Oh, and to irritate people.

I think that the days of corporate news media are numbered. User generated content, bloggers and independent news sources are the way of the future. Even major news networks are scaling back their operations and relying on freelance and independent producers to create content.. I get my news from a variety of sources and find that i like places like Digg and other aggregators where i can get news that is interesting or important to me and be able to get it from many sources. I believe the broadcast and print journalism is in a decline as older generations are replaced with new ones that are tech savvy, media educated and wont fall for the usual fodder dished out by traditional media outlets.

    A very scary thought

Rupert Murdoch is doing his best to acquire as many news outlets as possible and the ones Murdoch doesn't control or buy up, other neo-conservatives will.

The myth of the liberal media is just that:A total myth;A blatant lie to coverup the dirty deeds the conservative media broadcasts

Perhaps 3% - 5% of the media is liberal and they aren't exactly "socialists" or "communists," unless speaking the truth to scared & confused citizens is now a crime in the U.S.

I would like to see "The Buffalo News" REALLY dig its feet in on some major, pressing issues instead of trying to please a small segment of their readership.

Their asses ("The Buffalo News") must hurt like hell from sitting on the fence all the time.

It's not that the news is too biased or anything (it has a bias, but so do all newspapers and any claiming real objectivity should be trusted the least). It's the lack of talent that makes it crappy. The local staff is pretty bland and stenographic. Don't even get me started about Mary Kunz-Goldman. I know 10 year olds with more intelligent things to say.

As for the TV stations? They're all garbage, imo. The only thing I can stand to watch is the weather (though 9 out of 10 times i just hit up the weather service website), purely for the information and I don't care who it is delivering it.
One beautiful thing about having a government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations is that every disaster is measured in terms of economic loss. It's sort of like getting your arm sheared off in a car accident and thinking, "Damn, now it'll take longer to fold the laundry" as blood spurts from your arteries. - The Rude Pundit

Mary K. is gone, hopefully for good.

No more Buzz on Thursdays. No more crappy music reviews in Gusto and Sundays.

    She's gone, below, below!

Just like A-Mary A-Murray on Ch. 4, too hip for the room.

Channel 2---12 minutes to start the show on the DeJac case---are we that starved for news? Maybe its time they start focusing on issues that are ruining this area and the fact that despite all the talk (higgins, brown, eetc) nothing is still getting done.

    12 minutes---then afterwards they did a RECAP!

    .
    Rip Van Winkle journalism...

That small segment also believe that anything new is terrible and not to be trusted. This segement also believes that everyone else in the region must bend to THEIR will and change THEIR lifestyles so that this small segment of the elite can get what THEY want.

...That small segment is so ANTI MAINSTREAM to a fault... "If the rest of the country is doing it, if the rest of the world is doing it... then it must be BAD. We can't be like the rest of the country or the rest of the world... Buffalo must exist in some fantasy land bubble where a SMALL GROUP of special interest groups can be free to live out their idealistic lifestyle while the rest of the region suffers... We can't have real progress. Progress if for wimps. Progress is tacky. The past 100 years of economic and technological change never happened... It never happened we tell you!"
