    Question

    Anyone ever ordered Thanksgiving dinner made at Wegman's for their family on Turkey Day?

    I have been thinking about doing that. But I am unsure how it will taste...Making the dinner is fun, the worst part though is bringing everything to that moment for serving. The gravy, the mashed potatoes, carving~~yatyatayata....

    I have never tried Wegman's pre-made Thanksgiving dinner, but I do have one major, major problem with it.......TRADITION. The smell of a turkey roasting, the candied yams, mashed potatoes, cranberries and of course....the stuffing, all have to be made a certain way! While I am sure Wegman's is fine and dandy, I am also sure it is not as good as Mom's {whose recipes have now been handed down to a new generation.

    Shorts, I hear ya on the last minute hassles of getting everything to the table at the same time....he is my solution to combating the frayed nerves......BEER!
    Have a Happy Thanksgiving....which leads me to another topic....what, if any family traditions does your family have for Thanksgiving?

    Vicki did her first test run of a thanks giving dinner a few weeks ago. I think the Wegmans route would have been easier

    I've never tried their turkey dinners, but I've used them extensively for large catered parties and have never had any complaints. I LOVE being able to order everything and have it delivered. Definitely worth the $35 charge. Trying to pick up 15 or more trays of food is almost impossible!! (the delivery isn't done by Wegman's, it's 3rd party and I do know they don't deliver from all the Wegman's. I have to order from the Albert St. location).

    Bud has a good point about the aroma, but I see they have a heat n serve dinner. That one seems like a good choice- convenience AND all the aromas.
    I should try it. It's difficult to do a proper T-Day spread for just 2 people.

    Bud, I hear you, and you are absolutely right!!!! I love the aroma's and the process, but man the last time I did it, I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. And yes, it may not be beer for me just a nice red whine,,,ooops wine...ha hah aha.

    Traditionally, my family loves candied yams handed down for generations by layering it in a glass casserole dish sprinkled lightly with butter and dark brown sugar. (yams have been pre-boiled and peeled) broil them until the brown sugar gets a bit crusty.

    Then everyone loves my sauteed' brussel sprouts in olive oil, garlic, & italian bread crumbs for vege's.

    My italian salad sicilian style with new potatoes, yes that's right, olive oil, lemon, vingrette, new potatoes, tomatoes, red onions, romaine ...nice

    cranberries from the jar (I know...boring)

    Mashed potatoes,

    of course the stuffing which is not in the turkey
    Our stuffing is moist and will have ground sausage, and it just is a bit plain actually but good

    Some form of pasta, rigatoni and sauce with mozz. and rigotta.

    How about anyone else? (excuse some of the poor spelling)

    thanks cookie, I might do a dry run and see. My family is very fussy and look forward to the traditional way of doing things.

    I am going to send a recipe on a particular dessert traditional style....

    OK, lets talk turkey. I have never done this but, this year I am thinking about getting a fresh turkey from one of the local farmers. I have purchased fresh turkeys previously from Tops and/or Wegmans. Has anyone gone the local farmer route and is there really a taste difference.

    Actually, quite honestly I can't detect a taste difference between the supermarket fresh and the hormone injected butterballs.

    We have had the farm fresh/raised. Um is there a difference, I didn't notice really.

    My first year many many many years ago, I made a turkey for the first time. Well, when it was done and we were carving the turkey, guess what I forgot to do...you got it I forgot to take the gizzards out and the wire...I learned my lesson and didn't make another turkey for 20 years!!!!

    Shorts don't dispair you aren't the first one {nor the last} to do that. Years ago my darling wife was in charge of the thanksgiving pies, she of course made pumpkin. Well we are having dinner at the in-laws, finish dinner and everyone is ready for the pie. The pie looked fantastic and she proudly started slicing it and passing it around to each. Slowly each person took a bite as they got their pie and we all got this weird look as we tasted her pie. She used the canned pumpkin but never added the pie spice....do you know how bad unspiced pumpkin pie tastes? Thankfully she has never done that again, nor after all these years has she lived it down.

    Haven't we all done that at least once?

    My cranberry dish for Thanksgiving:
    1 Pkg cranberries, rinsed
    1 handful toasted walnuts
    1/4 cp (or more) sugar
    1 can mandarin oranges

    Put cranberries, sugar and walnuts in food processor and pulse til chopped (fine, but not mooshed).
    Drain the mandarin oranges, then cut or tear them to about 1/2 size.
    Add to the cranberry mixture and stir.
    Taste and add more sugar if too tart.
    I use Splenda in this and can barely tell the difference between it and sugar.
    This needs to sit for a while for the flavors to blend.
    If you like to be fancy, serve on romaine or other decorative lettuce leaf.

    My sister did it one year, she's only about a mile form the Wegman's on Amherst St. in Black Rock, she just got home Thanksgiving morning & this was pre-arranged, it was pretty good i must say....not the same, but then I never do the cooking OR clean up anyways, it sure saved them lots of money, I thought the turkey was FAR better then the one year my sis-in-law brought a turkey fryer, it was bad, best turkey ever was when friends living in Cleveland, picked out an Amish raised turkey & it was alive that morning, & on the plates that evening, melted in your mouth....

    OMG, bud that is too funny. I'm glad my snafoo's are others as well.!!!
