The Return of the Assault Rifle

I'm getting pretty sick of the Buffalo News. I've endured countless articles lambasting Chris Collins' efforts to control spending without offering alternatives. Now this:

The Return of the Assault Rifle

They base their definition of 'assault rifle' on anything they think LOOKS evil.

If AK-47s, AR-15s, FALs, etc. were banned in NY, the only people who wouldnt own them are those that abide by the laws.

Even if it were even possible to take all of the 'assault rifles' away from gang bangers, they would just use hunting firearms, or worse - crossbows.

Isn't it just actually easier to hold a Remington 700 at your hip than it is with an AR15?

You can tell they don't know what they're talking about when they refer to an assault rifle as being high caliber. My AR-15 shoots the same diameter bullets as my 10-22. If that's high caliber, what's low caliber? A BB gun?

Who goes gang-banging with an AR-15? What, a pistol isn't enough these days? Or for that matter, the gang?

I love the Buffalo News' definition:

"Assault weapons are generally defined as guns that have large capacity magazines allowing for continuous fire of dozens of rounds, a pistol grip that permits spray firing from the hip, and a folding stock that enables the weapon to be easily concealed."

    Say what?

Magazine capacity and stock configuration have nothing to do with what constitutes and assault rifle. An assault weapon is a select-fire weapon capable of semi-auto, burst, and full-auto fire. I guarantee that none of the seized weapons in the article were select-fire...

Thank goodness newspapers wont be around in another 5 years or so...

"pistol grip that permits spray firing from the hip"

the whole purpose of the pistol grip is to allow for a more natural hand position when the firearm is in a shouldered position and to facilitate the use of the safety and magazine release with minimal hand movement.

    Spray firing. Friggin' morons.

    NY still has a ban
all that was ever banned on the guns themselves were cosmetic features like bayonet lugs and flash suppressors
magazine capacity is still restricted to 10 rounds in NY unless the mag was made prior to september 1994

and yes, the type of stock a hunting rifle normally has allows easier holding from the hip. But regardless, no gun I know of is designed to be fired that way

as for folding stocks, the gun still has to be at least 26 inches long per federal law so it doesn't really make it concealable

It's the amount of powder behind the bullet.. not the diameter of the round.

Below are basically the same caliber. Which one do you think will travel faster/farther.

    223 rifle bullets

I wonder if getting shot with a tracer would cauterize the wound and keep it from bleeding

How ironic is it that the picture showing Hizzoner holding an AR-15 style rifle doesnt even qualify under the goverment definition of "assault rifle"?

No flashider, no bayonet lug, cant tell if the stock is fixed or pinned. But you get the idea, the rifle appears for all intents and purposes to be whats termed as ban-compliant configuration

The article mentioned AK-47's more yet he's holding an AR.

AND ask long as the bad guys have those, the good guys need better

Spray fire from the hip. Waste your ammo, go ahead.

I noticed the AR that Mayor Urkel is holding has no ejector port door.

    It's an M&P .22LR

    So much for "large caliber"

and considering the lack of flash supressor or bayonet lug I'm betting the stock is fixed which would mean this is not an "assault rifle" even by the liberal anti gunner definition

Well, there is a barrel shroud, which clearly makes the firearm more dangerous. There is also a pistol grip on it, which verbally taunts you if you don't hold the rifle in a fashion conducive to 'spray' firing.

All I have to say is you guys are a bunch of gun nuts.

    Give our legislators some credit.

Have you ever stopped to consider that the assault weapons ban in this state has saved lives????

I mean, since it's inception there has been a near 100% drop in bayonet deaths.
