If your starting price is low enough (under$1), you can post listings for free. Otherwise, they have sales now & then, such as half priced listing fees, free pictures, things like that.
What exactly are you selling?

The fees on eBay are insane. The listing fees are cheap. But once you sell the item, you get nailed with the Final Value Fees. I'll stick with the weirdos from craigslist. At least then you can keep all of the money you earn.
Fixed price final value fees
Electronics
8.0% of the initial $50.00, plus 5.0% of the next $50.01 - $1,000.00, plus 2.0% of the remaining final sale price balance ($1,000.01 - final sale price)
Clothing, Shoes and Accessories
12.0% of the initial $50.00, plus 9.0% of the next $50.01 - $1,000.00, plus 2.0% of the remaining final sale price balance ($1,000.01 - final sale price)
Books, DVDs & Movies, Music, Video Games
15.0% of the initial $50.00, plus 5.0% of the next $50.01 - $1,000.00, plus 2.0% of the remaining final sale price balance ($1,000.01 - final sale price)
All other categories
12.0% of the initial $50.00, plus 6.0% of the next $50.01 - $1,000.00, plus 2.0% of the remaining final sale price balance ($1,000.01 - final sale price)
Then most likely you'll accept paypal as payment. There are more fees then.
An additional 2.9% + $.30
So you sell a $40 collectable out of print dvd with only a $.25 insertion fee, but then you get nailed with a 15% Final value fee and a 2.9% paypal fee. That's 17% of your selling price. I used to buy and sell on ebay, but the fees were so outrageous that it wasn't worth it.

I have completely stopped buying and selling on ebay..... their %'s are compounding so once you get over $1000 20% right off the top in fees... so if you sell an item for $1000 ebay takes $200... plus, paypal takes their share... thing is paypal is a part of ebay...
so now the fees are 23% if your over $1000.
Its rediculously expensive to run on ebay, and I have ceased all business as a result...
thing is, Ebay is attempting to get into the same market as amazon, to do that they raised their fees so that the little people cant make any money to get rid of them... which they have pretty much done.
I believe in the Constitution, maybe you should too.
I get points for speaking the truth
I rarely sell anything for more than $40, so the fees are minimal. If you're selling big-ticket items, then yes, any online broker is going to be expensive. With the exception of Craigs List

Check your math. The fees are bad, but not as bad as you're stating.
On a $1000 item in "all other categories" the final value fee would be $63, or 6.3%. The papal exchange would be $29.30. Total cost would be $92.30, or 9.23%. The actual percentage goes down, the more expensive an item is. For a $10,000 item it'd be 5.33% total.
