Alright, I'm going to be serious about growing peppers (green and red), tomato’s, Carrots and cucumbers this year.

The last few years i've been starting them from seeds, but not till late spring. I've been using plant foods but nothing has been a great success. I do plan on builing a new garden from scratch that will be in the sun for about 85 to 90% of the day (one small tree in the way).

    What tips do you have?

Soil... The better the soil the better the plants will do.. As food goes it's better not to have enough versus using too much. If it wasn't for animals I would have a big garden. Problem is the rabbits, wood chucks and deer like to eat

Now, do you plant your seeds in cups then transplant them in the spring?

I'm starting my garden from scratch this spring so the soil will be fresh.

Most people are just fine going to the green house and buying what you want to plant into your garden.

Using plastic cups are fine...or any of the seed starting kits they have out there.

You have your inexpensive peat pots

burpee pellets coir greenhouse seed starter

    They grow a healthy seedling

    Seedlings

You have your Burpee seed starting kit that works well. The cord is from a heating mat which you really don't need unless your growing area is a little too cold. A warmer seed will sprout and grow faster.

    Burpee Seed Starting

Just as healthy as the peat pots

Once to proper size I put only the healthiest into these larger pots

When transplanting them to larger pots use good soil.

    Any good soil will do.

    I tend to use:

    or

These trays are nice because they are self watering from the bottom.

    Bbaby Tomatoes

Good soil will promote strong root growth.

I started watermelon last week end. I should have a watermelon by June, maybe I started them too early.

I also started morning glories b/c they need the early start. I'm going to have trouble with all of these vines...any sugestions?

YOu don't have to do any of the above. Sometimes I think it's just cheaper to go to a local farmer.

But if you like healthy Veggies the effort is worth it.

Hey Res, how's that aerogarden thing working out for you? I'd like to be able to grow fresh herbs inside/all year long. Is that even possible?
Someone who can't balance a budget probably shouldn't be in a position to spend someone else's money.

It rocks.. We have constant lettuce for sandwiches with the occasional salad for lunch.

    AeroGarden

Except I use General Hydroponic food instead of the supplied nutrient tablets they supply with the seed kits

    General Hydroponics Nutrients

    Herbs work

    AeroGarden

    They were healthy

    AeroGarden

    Tomatoes worked

    Tomato areogarden

    Areo Garden Tomatoes

But so far lettuce produce the most bulk.

    Thumbs up Tomatoes

    Let's talk TOTATOES:

I've tried different tomatoes: 3-4 kinds every year. Do you recomend anything else beside BIG BOY, Stew, etc., What's your favorite kind?

I try different types but always grow some type of grape type tomatoes each year. For quite a few years I grab something from Richard in Allentown for Heirloom types.

I well be starting most of my seeds this weekend. I wait until the first of March. I'll seed a few trays of Mesculn Mix and put them on a sunny window. I won't be planting those outside. I just clip them and eat as they get big. This usually starts at a week, and then continues for @ 4 more.
