Response times. Not that it really matters anyways in Buffalo, because all they can do is do CPR, control bleeding, and give oxygen and keep there hands in their pocket's while waiting for a ambulance to show up and hope the ambulance can get the patient to the hospital in time.

So since this turned into a thread about fire departments, lets change the subject kind of...How about the Fireman's Park on Losson Road by St. Phillips Church. Did you realize its owned by the town (taxpayers), maintained by the town (our taxes), but you CAN NOT USE IT unless your a fireman/firewoman.

As a perk goes isn't that less expensive compared to over building a fire hall with bar, workout area and so on?

Just grass and trees for the most part.

If I was supervisor of our town I would still expect regular audits done on how our property owner's money is being spent at all the halls.. It has nothing to do against volunteers. It has to do with being responsible to the property owners. I really can't see the group of guys running any volley hall saying an audit is not needed. They would be proud to show the town how well the books are kept and money spent. If an audit is blocked that should just raise up flags that something is up.

I believe the books are all fine, it's the out of control and no bid spending that is bleeding the taxpayers dry. Look at how much your local fire districts assessment is. 10 districts in town, that's quite a pile of money.

Then they come by and want donations on top of what Our Taxes give them.

    Firemen and halls

I guess your correct as usual, it doesn't cost us anything to own, maintain, dredge the pond, cut the grass, spray, build shelters, playground, etc.

Let me try and explain this to you using an example of moving....

If you need to move, typically, you have two options.

The first option is you hire a moving company. That costs a good amount of money. What you're paying for are 'professional' movers and for a set of expectations. They are going to show up at a specific time that you want, they are going to provide their own truck, supplies and tools, they are going to have insurance and they are going to do the job from start to finish. In this case, you get the final result of moving BUT you also pay for a lot of convenience.

The second option is to have friends help you move. This really does not cost anything besides beer and pizza if you have good friends. Well...unless you consider that your expectations are different. You have to go rent the truck. You have to pay for supplies and tools. You have to work around your friends schedule...both when they start and how long they can help. In this case you also get the final result of moving BUT you have to give up many of the conveniences with a professional AND you have to compensated differently.

Does it make sense to offer professional movers beer and pizza? No. You don't do that. At the same time, it makes no sense at all to hold your friends to professional standards. You wouldn't demand they show up at a specific time or supply the truck or materials. What people in this thread are doing is similar to trying to hold their friends to the same standards as professionals. That is just stupid.

The fire halls are the beer and the park is the pizza. That's the deal.

If you want a professional experience...HIRE AND PAY PROFESSIONALS. Period. But just grasp that for access to the halls for your personal events and access to the park for your personal pleasure that is going to come with a cost. It is going to cost salaries, benefits and pensions. It's going to cost overhead and operational costs. IT WILL COST MORE THAN WHAT YOU PAY NOW.

This is not a discussion about getting the best of both worlds...unless you're the type of person who would demand your friends helping you move at like professionals...this is a discussion about how much beer and pizza you want to provide to move.

If you can't afford to donate...don't.

They are still going to come to your house, put themselves in danger and put out the fire if you have one. They volunteer to make their community...which is the same one you live in....a better place. Their intent is true.

It's ok to be unable to donate. It's NOT OK to be so selfish....which is how you're acting.

For the millions your paying for a volunteer FD. You could have a manned professional paid fire department that provides Paramedic Level. Monroe County NY had volunteer FD's, but now most of them are paid departments and they staff their Fire station's 24/7
