Depew task force on tax relief holds inaugural meeting

by ALAN RIZZO ReporterReiterating concerns that Depew residents would be last on the list to receive services if the village had been dissolved, 14 residents and two village trustees met for the first time in the Depew Village Hall on Monday to brainstorm ways to take on tax issues.

Known officially as the Tax Relief Task Force, the group was created by the village to give residents a platform to make suggestions during the annual budget process, give input on adjusting village services, and accompany the Village Board when it approaches the towns of Cheektowaga and Lancaster regarding tax adjustments.

Village Trustees Karl Bukowiecki and Kevin Peterson, who will lead the task force as chairmen, said they hope to work with members to make village services more efficient and to get the communities of Cheektowaga and Lancaster to agree on the tax revenue they share.

"During the meeting, Peterson stressed that the members of the task force were not connected in any way other than that they are Depew residents who were chosen by village officials because of their experience."

That's a real understatement. They all have the same beliefs.....don't dissolve the village. Look at the names. Anyone who was in favor of dissolving the village was not even given any consideration to be on this task force.

They'll tackle the tough issues first, money savings by purchasing pens in bulk , then moving on to maybe paper or toner. That should satisfy the masses for a few years

I would first put privatization on the table first. Including looking at other unions who may provide services for less. When you give people a monopoly on services you will learn that cost will continue to climb.

This whole Depew debt issue still bothers me. If I paid taxes in the Village I'd be pushing for some type of controls board to oversee what they're leaders are doing to cut cost and cut spending. This is only going to get uglier for the taxpayer...but the kept their Village.

Like the Governor or not, he has the right idea where towns/villages/cities/counties should be looking into shared services. The taxes in Depew and other towns will continue to go up because you have a police force, a school district, pensions, and health insurance to pay for. Public pensions will only get worse, no way around it unless public pensions go away tomorrow.

Looks like they did an awesome job with the propsed budget having only a 5.5% tax increase. Don't get upset people. It's what you voted for in deciding not to dissolve the village. Stay tuned, lots more where that came from.

    The tax levy increased 5.5%.

The tax rate increase on the Cheektowaga side was 1.2% from $12.022456 to $12.165707

The tax rate increase on the Lancaster side was 4.4% from $12.267812 to $12.806007
