Buffalo, Not Boston, Ranked Best City for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Despite our proud Irish roots, Boston isn’t the best city to spend St. Patrick’s Day. It isn’t second-best, either.

The Hub ranked third in a new report by personal finance social network WalletHub this week, behind Buffalo, New York and Madison, Wisconsin. Also representing Massachusetts on the list was Worcester in fifth place, and Springfield in 11th.

Boston tied for the most St. Paddy’s celebrations per capita, while Worcester had the fourth-highest Irish population. Boston also had the fifth-fewest DUI-related deaths per capita—so there’s that.

To compile its ranking, Wallet Hub compared the 200 most populous U.S. cities using 16 metrics across four dimensions: St. Patrick’s Day traditions (share of Irish population, Irish pubs per capita, time since first-ever parade), costs (average price of a six-pack, lowest price of a three-star hotel on St. Paddy’s), safety and accessibility (crime rate, walkability, traffic congestion), and weather.

So how would Buffalo capitalize on this report for 2018?

Market to the top 20 other popular cities to pull tourist to Buffalo for a "St Patrick's Day Bash"?

Offer a "Green be Irish" weekend "get away" and promote the small breweries ?

Starting next Thursday through at least noon on Monday you amateurs would be well advised to stay off the streets and indoors. We Fenians will be out in force drinking April's mortgage payment. Just sayin'.

Want to market something really unique to WNY? Market Dingus Day. No one outside the reach of local tv has ever heard of it. We could equate it with living with cannibals on the order of the new and different.

How do you use a report that was published in that magazine to attract tourist to Buffalo.

If you ran a convention center you would have a marketing company spending time on how to keep conventions coming to the city. Wouldn't you?

Dingus day in my opinion doesn't have a large enough following outside of Buffalo to bother with it except locally.

    This is from 2011

America's Best St. Patrick's Day Parades

We've compiled the 10 best places to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in the United States. It is by no means a complete list -- virtually every American city with a bar throws some semblance of a party around March 17. However, all of our picks take the celebration to the next level with parades and unique time-honored traditions. Consider it a badge of honor if you can survive them with your health (and dignity) intact.

    And sell Irish Whiskey

    More Than A Whiskey Bottle

Every St. Patrick’s Day, we commemorate our Irish heritage by collaborating with some of the finest artists and illustrators Ireland has to offer. Each year one artist’s design and name appears alongside John Jameson’s on the St. Patrick’s Day Limited Edition Bottle.

    About The Artist

This year, our bottle was designed by local Dublin artist Steve McCarthy, who merged historical and contemporary Dublin with his own unique style. Watch Steve McCarthy talk through his inspiration for creating this year’s Limited Edition Bottle in the video below.

    The Story Behind The Bottle

The design was inspired by the Jameson family motto, Sine Metu; which means Without Fear, and an old

Irish phrase, “chancing your arm”, which translates to being open to new ideas and new people.

Above all else, the 2017 Jameson St. Patrick’s Day Limited Edition Bottle was designed to be shared.
