Marine Drive apartments, prime waterfront real estate - http://www.wgrz.com/news/local/marin...sate/416290030
Duh. You don't say. A massive parcel of land on the water near Canal Side and the marina has value....
But this is the best part....and typical of Buffalo....
Fillmore District councilman David Franczyk knows the property is prime, but cautions, "everyone of any income and all incomes, rich, poor have a right to live on the waterfront."
No Dennis. Everyone does not have the right to live on the waterfront. Waterfront is prime real estate. Prime real estate should be maximized to its fullest to generate the most taxes for the city. In turn, you can take those proceeds and provide affordable and quality housing for "everyone of any income" as you put it. This is nothing but pandering to the voting block of residents. Some who pay under $400 a month for a two-bedroom apartment....to live on the waterfront.
The article goes on to say back in 2003, when the city was looking at selling Marine Drive, the price tag was up to $37 million dollars. That was before Canal Side. The price now could be double. If the leadership in the city had any vision they would try and find a deal with a developer or a group of developers. Package the Perry Projects and Marine Drive into a single deal. In exchange for development rights to Marine Drive a developer would need to redevelop the Perry Projects to include at least the same number of units from Marine Drive and existing Perry Project residents who are not displaced. The BMHA can act as a backdrop to financing. In turn you would add a massive amount of revenue to the tax base by not only adding units but also adding residents to downtown.

Last election Franczyk won the primary with just 621 votes. Won the general with 1,743 against 420. He has been in the same position for 30 years. He is the problem and not a solution. But he knows who to pander to and knows people in his district don't care about anything but a handout.

Did you hear the one about "Everyone has the right to live on the water front"..... that's true if you can afford it. True?

Honestly shocked how the high end taxpayers allow him to remain. The good news is the lower west side is being gentrified and the city is going to do new assessments in the next few years. I doubt he has enough cheddar to pass around the waterfront and LWS to appease them...especially since his focus is the east side.

Back to his comment.
Does anyone think that people have the right to live in an area they normally would not be able to afford if it interferes with people's property rights?
Let's say a private person owned those 6 acres. If they sold it to another private investor shouldn't that buyer be able to do what they want?
If they do sell the property I would think it's wrong if the City spent millions making more subsidized housing. "Government" tends to over pay for what they do.
How many apartments are there? Double wide trailers on the way.
