I just shipped my DNA to AncestryDNA

I had an unexpected Christmas gift.

    The AncestryDNA Kit
    .

My DNA was on it way to the processing center at 2:42 PM 12/28/16

How long does it take to get my results?

Your AncestryDNA test results will normally take about 6-8 weeks to process from the time that the lab receives your DNA sample. Due to high demand, results may take longer than 8 weeks. Please note that you must also activate your DNA kit online in order to begin processing.
We'll see how long the entire process takes.

Discover the family story your DNA can tell.

Uncover your ethnic mix, discover distant relatives, and find new details about your unique family history with a simple DNA test.

I was adopted when I was 5 days old, and don't know anything about my ancestry. I'd love to get one of these
Let me articulate this for you:

It definitely would be more enlightening to you than us that know some of our heritage

What is in the AncestryDNA Kit?

The kit was $99 plus shipping.

Included was a self addressed/paid shipping box, instructions, a bag to seal the DNA collection tube. The tube and instructions have a unique ID that they use to track the item

The AncestryDNA instructions were easy to follow

First thing to do to activate your AncestryDNA kit is to click here:

    Active AncestryDNA Kit

Printed on the side of the DNA collection tube is your unique code is 15 alternating letters and numbers.

You fill in the blanks with the information requested and your kit is activated.

Step to for the AncestryDNA kit is to gather your DNA

The collection tube has a removable funnel that you can spit in.

The second cap contains a DNA stabilization fluid.

They came up with a cool way to seal the fluid until you finally tighten down the cap on the collection tube.

You spit in the tube up to the black line, pull the small funnel off and tighten down the lid. You shake the tube for 5+ seconds to make sure the stabilization fluid mixes with your DNA sample.

Place it in the plastic bag, seal it and put it into the shipping box.

That little cloth piece in the bag is there to absorb any moisture. You leave it in.

I wondered if outside temps would effect the sample. From what I read the sample is fine shipping in freezing and warm temperatures.

The AncestryDNA test uses microarray based autosomal DNA testing.

    I think this explains it.

    Yo HiPkat

My adopted sister did it - she has just recently met her maternal father, sister and aunt. Her Mom is still rsisting a meeting.

My wife also did it and its awesome the info they provide.

I feel roots are valuable in knowing ourselves - there's so many questions in life ! So far my sister says its helped her in ways she didn't even consider when she did it.

My family has a complete family tree book back to where our family originated. My uncle actually invited all of us in NY State to contribute - then he used the telephone and internet over a 5 year period. We now each have a book that includes family crests from the days of the crusades and more. Cool !

Good luck to anyone doing it.

You are going to find out that you have an ape in your family tree, just like every other human, including the Obamas.
