    Niagara Wheatfield rejects Columbus Day.

What BS this is.. The tribe wants their own holiday same BS like mayor erkel renaming Squaw Island and the libs on the school board in lancaster. Again libsgetting their way. whats next pres day rename it it to chief white owl day

An Italian-American teacher and some Tuscarora Indian students created a movement that led the Niagara Wheatfield School Board last week to do away with the Columbus Day holiday.

Instead, the second Monday in October will be observed as Indigenous Peoples Day by the school district, the board decided.

That’s because Christopher Columbus, the Italian-born explorer who was sponsored by Spain when he “discovered” America in 1492, was a genocidal criminal, the board was convinced by a presentation by Quinna Hamby,(kid is a lib) a senior who is vice president of the school’s Native American Club.
The holiday was just invented to have an Italian hero image, but they just selected Christopher Columbus without looking at his history and what he stood for,” Hamby said. “We’re not asking you to stop celebrating who you are, but just don’t celebrate a man that represents hurting and killing a whole population of natives.”

High school Principal Timothy Carter another lib said the coming events signboard at the high school will be changed to declare Oct. 10 a day off for Indigenous Peoples Day.
God must love stupid people; He made so many

“We’re not asking you to stop celebrating who you are, but just don’t celebrate a man that represents hurting and killing a whole population of natives.”
I didn't know he committed mass genocide.

He spearheaded the transatlantic slave trade and has been accused by several historians of initiating the genocide of the Hispaniola natives. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of spreading the Christian religion.[5]
If you go to the link below look under the section "Atrocities and tragedies of colonization"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus

The historian Howard Zinn writes that Columbus spearheaded a massive slave trade; in 1495 his men captured in a single raid 1500 Arawak men, women, and children. When he shipped five hundred of the slaves to Spain, 40 percent died en route.[46] Historian James W. Loewen asserts that "Columbus not only sent the first slaves across the Atlantic, he probably sent more slaves – about five thousand – than any other individual... other nations rushed to emulate Columbus."

De Las Casas writes that when slaves held in captivity began to die at high rates, Columbus switched to a different system of forced labor: he ordered all natives over the age of thirteen to collect a specified amount (one hawk's bell full) of gold powder every three months. Natives who brought the amount were given a copper token to hang around their necks, and those found without tokens had their hands amputated and were left to bleed to death.[118]
How is Spain handling their Slavery Reparations?

The Roman Empire slaughtered thousands of people...watched gladiators for entertainment ...murder each other in combat...Genghis the Khan slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people....so.....where do we stop?? to not acknowledge any of these historical events?
The actions by Niagara Wheatfield are attention getting extreme actions...C.C. was not a saint..but the Italians celebrate this day and their heritage should be respected and celebrated.

I wonder if the presentation by the children included the part of Indian tribes routinely launching genocidal wars against each other in which they routinely took slaves and horribly tortured captives. Nah, probably not.

ABSOLUTELY NONE...but acknowledging part of history is important...what about the Holocaust,D-Day, Pearl Harbor..all important dates that either had horrific events..or people who are recognized for their participation ..whether good or Evil.Whats next...Manhattan becoming an
Indigenous state of its own? Political correctness carried too far?

You're not making any sense. We acknowledge lots of history without needing to celebrate it as a fun holiday.

Are you trying to say we're ignoring the Holocaust simply because we all don't get a 3-day weekend for it with parades and mattress sales?

You're not understanding my point...traditional historic celebrations are suddenly becoming the politically correct action of changing or eliminating or name changing because those who find fault in those whom we celebrate actions...so they find a reason to change or boycott.
Big business commercializes holidays for their profit....what will happen next??
Thanksgiving taken off the books , because pilgrims were part of the decimation of the American Indian?

If we're being honest that's all this boils down to. Italians are pissed that they are going to lose a holiday. Has nothing to do with wanting to celebrate Columbus.

Columbus day is an ethnic holiday?

It wasn't even a federal holiday until 1937.... Not even all the states recognize it. Relax.

Other than Italian Americans wanting it to be a holiday 75 years ago, there is nothing "ethnic" about the holiday.

Go to the Italian festival in Buffalo. I don't think it's the same as when it was first started.
