New search for hiring cops goes to the county.

Something that has been going on for awhile now hire more black cops in Cheektowaga. They cant pass the test so now Zack is looking out of the box to hire them. Is zack tuning his back on everyone that isn't black that has passed the test in Cheektowaga? Oh boy that could be a lawsuit in the making if I am a white guy with a high score and not being hired I would be seeking a good attorney and asking ? to the civil service dept.
"Previously the town received a list of eligible applicants who only lived in Cheektowaga. Zack recommended the change in order to hire the most qualified candidates and diversify the police force. BS.. Wait until the first lawsuit against the town. Supv Diane " It will offer us the opportunity to hire the best candidates
though out the county. You never had to do this before and you have a very good police force.

From the Cheektowaga police site -
    Take the Test

The Cheektowaga Police Department hires only from the Erie County Civil Service list. The Civil Service test for Police Officer is given every three years. The next test is projected to be given in November 2016. The candidate must not have reached his/her 35th birthday on or before the date of the written examination. More information is available from the Erie County Website.

    Pass the Written Test

Those who pass the Police Officer test are placed on the list for the Police Department in the City or Town in which they live. Candidates must live in Cheektowaga or Depew to be placed on the list for Cheektowaga Police. The address given on the application for the Police Officer test will determine the list(s) on which the candidate will be placed. There is no minimum amount of time a candidate must live at an address before he or she can use it on the application. Those who move to a new Town or City must change their address through Erie County Civil Service. Currently, Erie County makes address changes effective the 15th of the month following the date of the address change application. Any updates to this will be noted in the link below. The change of address form is available by clicking HERE.

    Score Well

After Erie County mails out test scores, they also will schedule physical agility tests for candidates passing and scoring high enough on the written test.

Once test results are received, and the Department is ready to begin the hiring process, eligible candidates are selected by their test score. Candidates are sent a canvass letter by the Town, to see if they are still interested in the position. If more than one candidate has the same score, all candidates at that scoring level receive a canvass letter. The Department is required to hire one of the top three candidates, if more than three candidates have the same score all are considered equal as the “top three”. Below is a link to the applicable Civil Service Law; CSL § 61.1, CSR § 3.6, 4.2

Cheektowaga or Depew to be placed on the list for Cheektowaga Police.

99% of the towns hires have been from within the town over the years. The problem is the people they are looking to hire (race) cannot pass the test, fail the drug test, fail the interview, or have a criminal record in the town. Cheektowaga is looking to hire race Depew and Lancaster, Hamburg, or OP are not. Lets say if you have a white vet that lives in Cheektowaga female/male 25 years old and scores 100% on the test then vet points and a perfect choice, but the town is looking county wide for someone else (race). The town better have a lot of money to fight a lawsuit. The town worries about hiring more black cops but then they have none or one working in the towns work force.

I know lots of minority residents of cheektowaga who could pass the test. Perhaps the problem is that they don't find being a police office for cheektowaga of interest so they are not even taking the test. They didn't grow up with a family member, or even an extended family member, who was an LEO so few of them developed a vision of themselves in a law enforcement career. Combine that with hundreds of years of historical "you are not welcome" mats at the doors of local police stations, and it is easy to understand why finding qualified minority candidates can be difficult. I'd much rather have the openings be open to all Erie county residents than to lower the standards just to get a few minority officers from cheektowaga. We could require that an officer move into the town within 3 years of appointment to keep his or her job.

Since, as their own website states, The Department is required to hire one of the top three candidates, if more than three candidates have the same score all are considered equal as the “top three”., how are they lowering their standards?

Why stop at 3 years? Having a police officer live on your street makes that street safer. Even if small there is a value to that.

If the idea is X number of years and then you can move...make it for promotions as well. If you want to go from Patrol to another department or move up in Patrol...residency goes back to 0 and you have to do X more years.

Lifetime residence seems to work pretty well now, the new employees know that from day 1.

I believe a First Line Supervisor in CPD is a Sergeant, not a Lieutenant.
If it weren't for the United States Military, there would be NO United States of America !
