From everything I've read about Uber, it seems to me that Uber is exploiting its drivers in the same way that many firms exploit employees they call "contractors" in that the employee only gets "wages" but nothing else. Uber is worse, however, because it requires the driver to use his own vehicle and insurance coverage. My guess is that when real costs are calculated (ie, insurance, depreciation, gas, etc), Uber drivers don't make even minimum wage.

You think Uber forcing their drivers to own their car and pay for insurance is better than the medallion system that currently exists in the taxi cartel? That's rich.

Take a minute to read this study that SDSU did a few years ago on the Taxi industry in San Diego. It's not good. It goes into detail on the 'lease' system for medallion system of taxis. Where drivers are forced to work long hours to cover the cost of their lease in order to pay for the right to drive. To the issue of Uber drivers not making a minimum wage, that's because they are independent contractors....just like the majority of taxi drivers...who as well run into challenges making a good living.

Both Uber and Taxis have their issues. The but they are not the same due to the medallion system. If people actually GAF about the safety of riders and the compensation of drivers they would look to a pivot away from medallion systems and apply regulations equally along side providing EQUAL access to fairs. This is mostly airport runs. Until people take this approach, it's really just picking between two systems that need correction.

And people are picking the easier, lower fare system.

Uber might be taking one big hit in the duper

SAN FRANCISCO — Ruling in a case with implications for the entire on-demand economy, a federal judge on Tuesday certified a class of Uber Technologies Inc. drivers seeking employee status and reimbursement for withheld tips.
U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of the Northern District of California found the drivers' situations are similar enough that the threshold question—whether drivers are employees or independent contractors—can be answered on a classwide basis. He certified a class of California drivers who have worked for Uber since 2009, and will allow the class to proceed with claims that Uber illegally kept drivers' tips.

Uber economy like 'turn of the century sweatshop'

hat's according to a new report from the National Employment Law Project, an employment rights advocacy group.

Uber, like many other on-demand startups, relies on contract workers to perform services.

It's a model that has come under fire. While lauded by some for giving workers flexible hours, there's a lot of downside. Independent workers aren't entitled to minimum wage, overtime compensation, unemployment insurance or protection from workplace discrimination. They also aren't entitled to benefits and don't have the right to join a union.

A growing number of lawsuits have called the on-demand model into question.

"The growing concerns about workers made it urgent for us to suggest some policy standards," NELP Deputy Director Rebecca Smith told CNNMoney.
