Has anyone ever been some place outside New York State that attepted to copy our Buffalo Wings?
...the restaurants, the pizza (who needs chains?), the beef on Weck, the Webers mustard, the wings, the Broadway market.

This is edging on self promotion discotrish...This is a positive point how other than trying to promote your book?
Agree about the self-promotion thing. Either the admin oughta delete her posts or I'm gonna start posting links to my company website.
(Discotrish,
hope you don't mind that I use this, I underlined a few things to support my opinion)
This novel celebrates Western New York and the people, places and things that make it unique. In a literary world that seems to favor vapid social-climbing New Yorkers who dress impractically, Buffalo Winged highlights the down-to-earth qualities of the natives and their resilience in the face of adversity. Buffalo and Western New York almost feel like characters themselves, and it goes without saying that this is a story that couldn't occur anywhere else.
IMO- What better place to express Positive Points of Western NY then in a board of the same title. I'd see reluctance if the self-promo link was posted in every thread to off-set (unrelated to) the topics, but I thought this was a board on the ideas of positive points.
Anyways, I'm not talking about commercializing the threads, but a little 'good' in one place (on one message Board) brings the sense of 'New York Nostalgia'.
Well then point out the positive points in the furom without the need to buy the book.
It's almost like the commercial tactics you see on late night tv... Watch this commerical and we'll tell you how to make $1,000,000 bucks. What do they tell you? Buy our book for the secret for only $19.99.
Maybe I'll start a forum called self promotion of Buffalo Based businesses. Only rule we'll have is one link from that website stating come peek at speakupwny.com on thier home page.
It would be a win win situation for both parties. Loads of eyes balls reading this site maybe going to see what the local business wants to offer.
I was thinking about putting my companies names on the post but i didnt' want people thinking this site was created to promote the companies I own. I'm one to be self serving as some of our politicians are.
I was thinking about starting a business column on www.onlinebuffalo.com. In return for submitted articles that help people run thier business or lower thier cost of doing business we would allow a link back to the company submitting the article. When you have 5000 or more people a month coming threw a website there is a chance to gain business.
Comments?

Now that you mentioned it this way, I realized that I misunderstood what was written.

That's not a bad idea, a lot of sites have reciprocating links.
It's your site to do as you wish, just keep in mind that by doing so, you'll be turning this into a commercial venture.Originally posted by WNYresident

Not that there's anything wrong with that, as Seinfeld said.
Why would if be a commerical venture to allow businesses to promote themself for free? Onlinebuffalo.com charges for ads to placed there seeing there's so much traffic going through the site. Speakupwny.com was started because i was tired of listening to so many people whining as i did about WNY and NYS politics. How many things do you acutally get for free in NYS?
I could even make the forum postable once a person has 50 post. If they are willing to put thier two cents in enough then they deserve to better thier business..Something on that order.
My book isn't about food. It's fiction. It does promote the area, but if you have a specific interest in food from the WNY area there are cookbooks, lists of restaurants and such that would make more sense as a source of that type of information.Originally posted by WNYresident

So I guess the message is don't buy fiction if you are looking for a recipe. There aren't any.

Technically, it's not free if you require them to post a link on their website in exchange for a promotion on yours. There is a legal consideration involved there (i.e. I'll plug your site, if you plu mine).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but you may want to seriously consider it. I don't doubt your good intentions in the least. I also wouldn't blame you if you made a few bucks off this site.
As far as OnlineBuffalo....there is 100x more meat to this site. Besides a good webmaster that site gets blown away by this one
Onlinebuffalo get's a lot more traffic than most sites in the area. Not buffalo.com or the news yet seeing they have so much news in general.
Onlinebuffalo is basically a family of all the websites you see on that site. I think if we added up the combined total sections like buffalo.com does we'd be right behind them and blow away all the other sites in the area. Its meant to be more of a home page than anything particular. Plus it's so old and search engine friendly it helps pull all the sites on the front page up through the ranks. Go to www.msn.com and search buffalo NY. I think we pop up #4. Just one of the web sections of onlinebuffalo get's over 1,000,000 - 1,200,000 impressions a month.
Speakup is already past 300,000 impressions and it's only a few months old. I'm not going to sell advertising on it enless i know it would give people some results in thier business.
I have an issue about taking peoples money and not showing results. (insert here: Unlike a lot of out elected officials and patronage hires )
There's a lot of websites that like to BS people and take thier money to put a banner adds up, but enless you have a LOT of unque IPS visiting it's useless. AND i mean lots, 50,000 hits sounds good but it's useless. You want uniques and page impressions.
Speakup I had over 4500 Uniques for dec which is rather good. Thats about 4500 people just for that one month and over 20,000 unques in 4 months. I think it's value would be to help pull other sites up into the search engines. What makes speakupwny good for an advertiser is they are returning over and over. Page impressions is like branding a product. If you were a politician you want to brand your name in front of hte people that vote. If you tell them what they want to hear and produce results, your a winner.
Type buffalo politics or cheektowaga politics, amherst sinking homes, Buffalo giambra stuff like that. You'll notice we are popping up everywhere. Even the self proclaimed political sites are not in the search engines as well as we are. Plus i'm working on making it better. That alexa ranking site has us pegs at the 5th busiest site in buffalo behind buffalo.com and buffalonews.com.
I think the best client for speakup would be anyone running for office. They want to be placed in front of people that will vote. Exposure. Exposure. Exposure!
Another good client would be any small group that wanted to get the word out for thier cause. I didn't say a product, I mean more like the people that don't want a casino, the sinking home issues in amherst, the hickory woods people.. stuff like that.
The people finding the site are finding us through the search engines on topics that interst them. Community based issues so any site that is community based would benefit the most.
It's power in numbers and team work. I have offered to help some causes in the area with websites and they basicaly just blew me off. I'm surprized seeing they can see the results and readership we are proving , it's not like BS'ing them on our capabilities. THe point is if you have a cause and you want people to know about it, you need to make your site pin point that cause.
Example I wanted to capture all the political type stuff in NYS so we geared the code of the site to make buffalo politics, cheektowaga politics, New York state politics etc when placed in a search engine to pull them directly to our site. Now if you were a judge or a council person wanting to get your name in front of hte people to vote for you, you want people interested in politics.
Now the people looking for those topics in search engines will find us easily which then means your banner add is targeting the exact people you want. Presto, your word gets out.
We can do the same thing if you have a unique product also.
OH i consider free where there is no exchange of money. IF we stated a link for a link it's a requirement not a fee
Go to www.msn.com and search buffalo NY. I think we pop up #4.
and so I did, you're right. (not that I doubted you )
