A Washington Street man was listed in fair condition Saturday morning in Erie County Medical Center after he was shot in the back Friday morning on Jewett Avenue, Buffalo police reported.
Vance Whetstone, no age listed, told police that an East Utica Street man shot him in the back just before 11 a.m. in the 200 block of Jewett. Shooting of man follows dispute on East Side

    10/22/2006

A Timon Street man was being treated early Saturday in Buffalo General Hospital after being shot in the groin following a dispute with another man at Broadway and Woltz Avenue late Friday night, Buffalo police reported.
Antoine Williams, no age listed, told police that he was with friends on Broadway shortly before midnight when he was bumped from behind by another man as he tried to use a pay phone. Words were exchanged between the two men, and the man who bumped Williams then demanded money, police said.

Williams told police he "heard a pop" and then felt burning in his groin. Williams' friends drove him to Buffalo General and pushed him out of their car by the emergency room, police said.

Williams was found to have a gunshot wound on the right side of his groin. His condition was not released.

Three with gun rob bank and injure a customer

    10/24/2006

A Bailey Avenue M&T Bank was robbed Monday of more than $20,000 by three men, and a customer was injured when one of the robbers jumped back over a counter and landed on the man's head, Buffalo police reported.
Bank officials at the branch at 644 Bailey told police the three entered the bank wearing black clothing and black ski masks. One was armed with a rifle. The men ordered everyone in the bank to "get on the floor."

The second man scaled a counter at the first window and snatched $310 cash from a nearby teller's hand. When he jumped back over the counter, he landed on the head of a male customer. The extent of his injuries was not known.

The robbers got away with the large sum of cash taken from the bank's safe. They fled after a teller pushed a panic alarm at the bank, police reported.

One of the robbers pointed the riffle at a customer in the parking lot and ordered him to the ground as the three fled the bank. They drove away in an older model gold four-door sedan.

Sweep nets 11 in 'club drugs' scene

The drug-fueled club and house-party scene in Buffalo and Rochester took a significant hit Tuesday with the federal roundup of 11 people accused of smuggling "club drugs" from the Toronto area and distributing them in Western New York, authorities said.
Following a 20-month investigation led by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, U.S. Attorney Terrance P. Flynn announced the felony complaints accusing the 11 people of smuggling and selling Ecstasy, GHB, ketamine and crystal methamphetamine.

The ages of the suspects reflected the young crowd these drugs appeal to; all 11 people charged are in their 20s, with most in their early 20s.

During the roundup at 17 sites in Buffalo and Rochester, federal agents confiscated approximately 2,000 Ecstasy tablets, some other drugs and cash.

Agents also dismantled what they called a small, informal drug lab in a residence on Lexington Avenue, between Ashland and Norwood avenues.

The pipeline for the popular club drugs traveled from the Toronto area to Western New York through both the Peace Bridge and Rainbow Bridge.

These drugs are commonly used at local nightclubs and at after-hours parties held in private homes, warehouses or private lofts, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Clare Kane said.

"We arrested everybody from the person we believe was leading the organization to the distributors and smugglers," said Lev Kubiak, assistant special agent in charge of the local Immigration and Customs Enforcement office. "I think this will have a major impact on the distribution of these drugs in the Buffalo and Rochester areas."

While the seized drugs are associated with the late-night party scene, federal officials were quick to emphasize the dangers of these drugs.

"Make no mistake, drugs such as ketamine, Ecstasy and GHB are not recreational drugs," stated Peter J. Smith, special agent in charge of the Buffalo office for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "They are dangerous substances, which destroy lives and lead to crime."

Charged in one criminal indictment was Michele Tucker, 26, of Buffalo, who faces felony drug-trafficking charges.

The other 10 defendants, also facing felony charges, were identified as Laura Mazzi, 23, of Buffalo; Wayne Rinker, 21, of Buffalo; Amanda Prus, 21, of Buffalo; Matthew Heim, 24, of Buffalo; Alan Hodgson, 22, of Buffalo; William McAndrew, 23, of Hamburg; Michael Herlong, 29, of Buffalo; Brandyn Kimmel, 21, of Depew; Serene Ellis, 21, of Jamestown; and Jeffery Parasida, 28, of Pittsford.

The investigation was led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with help from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI, Customs and Border Protection, state police, and police in Buffalo and Rochester.

Baby's Body Left at Buffalo Funeral Home

Oct 26, 2006 - BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Police say the body of a dead baby was inside a package dropped off at a funeral home in Buffalo yearly yesterday.

Authorities say an autopsy is being conducted today to determine if the baby boy was delivered alive to the James E. Grace Funeral Home on Ontario Street, or if the infant was already dead or if he was stillborn before being left at the business.

Police say the funeral director didn't immediately open the package because he thought it might have been intended for his wife.

Homicide detectives are trying to locate the baby's mother.

Police say there was a note with the package but they aren't disclosing what was written.

Youth gets probation for having gun in school

    10/27/2006

Bernard Brown, a former East High student, Thursday was placed on probation for five years and granted youthful offender status by State Supreme Court Justice Penny M. Wolfgang on his guilty plea to a felony weapons charge for bringing a .22-caliber handgun to the Northampton Street school in March.
Brown, 16, of Briscoe Avenue, was suspended from school after his arrest March 17 when school security officers found the handgun, loaded and defaced, in a coat in his locker. He pleaded guilty to the highest charge lodged against him, according to prosecutor Jeffrey P. DiPalma.

A teacher called for a check of the area by security officers after spotting a large group of students huddling around Brown's locker, the prosecutor said.

Brown, reportedly now being home-schooled, was granted youthful offender status, which will keep the criminal case off his personal records
