A project to relocate and expand the Community Health Center of Buffalo on the campus of Erie County Medical Center took another step forward last week.

The Community Health Center of Buffalo, an independent nonprofit, filed a certificate-of-need application Oct. 1 with the State Department of Health to relocate to a new, $9.7 million, 36,000-square-foot building on ECMC’s Grider Street campus.

The agency has previously received support for the expansion in the form of a $4.2 million grant through the Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law of New York (HEAL NY) as a safety net provider.

This summer, the Buffalo Planning Board approved the two-story clinic, to be built on a parking lot on the ECMC campus that currently is used as a Mercy Flight landing spot and overflow parking.

The new facility more than doubles the size of the existing facility, housed in 14,000-square-feet of leased space inside ECMC for the past 10 years. About 8,000 patients are treated annually at the facility.
