    Thumbs down Huge operation!

The word is that this "SUPERMARKET" is going to be the supplier of fresh killed meat, EVERYTHING but pigs----from Rochester to Cleveland! Nothing occasional is being planned for this slaughter house, an appr. 35,000 sq. ft. building which the mayor himself said is 20% slaughter house. I am told they want to buy the garage in front for a bigger parking lot and the city owned 6 acres behind the building for semi-truck turn around and parking.
I checked with Frank, Lack, accessor the other day about their address, 174 Ridge Road is still the official street number according to him---the 178 on the door is up there falsely.
A huge slaughter house like this belongs in the country, they did not even allow them in our city when our parents were kids. polanski and company should NOT have covered this up from the people of the First Ward and entire Citizenship, Buffalo kicked them out and the good ole' boys welcomed them.... why do you all think that is?
A good friend is putting her house up for sale, I am heart broken, 2nd-3rd-4th wards----HERE WE COME!

SO 20 percent of 35000 is only 7000 square feet. That's not a lot of space. That's like 2 McMansions you see the couple of guys building around here.

What did darling and co do on william street in buffalo. Didn't they burn by product or something like that years ago?

Maybe people would like to have information about what is going on? I suggest everyone show up at a council meeting and ask questions there. In a publuic forum maybe just maybe you will get the answers you are looking for.The best thing about asking questions there is that you have witnesses to back you up.

    Polanski welcomes supermarket/butcher shop
    Glenn Gramigna
Lackawanna Mayor Norm Polanski is heaping praise on a new economic development project in the Steel City, which will bring at least 35 new jobs to 178 Ridge Rd., near North Steelawanna Ave. in his community's First Ward.
"This is going to be a brand new supermarket and butcher shop being built in an area of Lackawanna where there is no other large food market for people to shop in," Mayor Polanski reports. "Now our citizens have to walk or take the bus long distances to shop for nutritious food for their families. Once this very ambitious project is completed, these Lackawanna residents will have a place to buy fresh foods, at prices that will allow them to buy their meats and produce at prices cheaper than Tops and Wegman's. When the proprietor of this new store told me what their prices were going to be, I told him I'd be shopping there too!"

In addition, Polanski is very pleased with the good paying new jobs the project will bring.
"With so many people out there looking for work, to be able to announce to the people of the City of Lackawanna that there will be 35 or 38 new jobs coming, with more possibly on the way, is a great thing," said the Steel City chief executive. "We can't afford to say no to job creating economic development in this day and age."
The facility is owned by Mustasa and Yousef Jaarah who operate a similar business in Brooklyn.
"When this came up, I spoke with Buffalo Common Council President Dave Franczyk who visited their operation in Brooklyn," Mayor Polanski reports. "Dave told me that their facility down there is clean and carries no offensive odors, beyond the smell one might run into once you enter a butcher shop. These guys have met all the standards, codes, and regulations of the city as well as those of the county sewer inspectors."
Still, he admits that every new project will have at least a few naysayers.
"There are always a few people, such as First Ward Councilwoman, Andrea Haxton, who are against everything," he acknowledged. "But, the truth is the slaughtering of animals, such as would be done in a butcher shop is only 20% of this operation. We checked the people who will be running this enterprise out and found that they run a very clean and smell free operation in New York City and we are confident that they will do the same here."
Moreover, the mayor is convinced that there is a definite market for the products this new enterprise will offer.
"They will be offering kosher products that will find a market amongst our Jewish community in WNY and also they will be using methods that are in accordance with the Muslim faith, so members of these groups will shop there as well as other Lackawanna residents who are just looking for nutritious groceries, meat, and produce at lower prices than they would be paying elsewhere," Mayor Polanski concludes. "And, we could certainly use the 35 new jobs that will be created. I think this will be a good deal for everyone."

literal, What approach do I take about him slamming me in this newspaper article? He also states their prices are "cheaper than Tops and Wegmans", he slammed them too. The only thing I am against is turning OUR First Ward+City of Lackawanna into a dump and continued negative image.

    Post OH! A technicality

I guess I should have said letting anyone turn our First Ward into a dump for waste related businesses such as :
    The tire burning plant
    2 Infectious Medical Waste plants
Huge mountain of compost that will be blowing into every one's eyes, etc.
    Garbage burning plant
    Possible garbage transfer plant
    Bakery salvage
    Porno Shop
ALL and more were proposed and came here against what the citizens wanted.
When I said dump I meant a dump for businesses that other communities did not want and and yes literally turning the land into a dump that will add to what we already have here with the former Bethlehem Steel property.
And now a slaughter house! I have been receiving calls from other communities who are as appalled as we who live here are that this is being covered up and shoved on us citizens.
Those of us in the core group understand the term dump and the famous Buffalo News artist Tom Toles even did a cartoon with a caption "Dumps Are Us!" years ago. This is where we in the know got the term "dump" from.

    Couple things:

#1-- Buffalo did not kick them out. A few ignorant and uninformed people chased them away.
#2-- You just continue to ignore, just like those people in Buffalo did---the facts about the slaughter house. It's not going to smell, it's not going to destroy the neighborhood. If you're worried about that, as was said before, you're too late. Lackawanna is already pretty run down in that area, sorry to say.
If you're worried about something that smells, how about that Sorrento Cheese plant? Now that stinks. Stop killing small business. Your city already has little to begin with. Plus, it's kinda discriminating against your Muslim population to deny this slaughterhouse. As a politician you need to change with your constituency.

    Ms Haxton,

Where exactly do you think the meat that you eat comes from? It was once part of a live animal. It's not like you're going to be forced to watch the slaughter. As long as the slaughtering is done humanely, and the premises are maintained in a sanitary manner, what is your problem with this? The locals get a small supermarket and a butcher shop. The city/neighborhood gets some much needed jobs. The city increases its tax base a smidgen. The owners make some $$$. This seems like a positive all the way around.

It's not like the neighborhood could be mistaken for Troy-Del Drive in Amherst, and Lackawanna's First Ward is never going to attract a Neiman-Marcus, now is it?

I'm not sure that this is really a bad thing for the City of Lackawanna. What I am sure of is that I am against the underhanded way this slaughterhouse issue was handled by the Mayor. He deliberately kept this controversial matter from the public. This had to have been in the works for some time in order for them to have already met all the standards, codes, and regulations of the city as well as those of the county sewer inspectors. The mayor handled this the way he handles everything, behind closed doors and under the table. He could consider trying a little diplomacy rather than the gestapo method he and his goons are used to.

    Exactly!

You see what I see. Remember we are a democracy, or supposed to be. Transparent government is a movement occurring by the people across America, but I guess the good ole' boys do not watch the news. I too am extremely sad that polanski and company would cover-up a controversial business such as a slaughter house. I wish you all had one planned within a few blocks of your home, I am sure you would take a different stand. Our city is not broke, they are just not prudent with their expenditures.
Time will tell, I feel sorry for our children, very sorry.
We only want the killing part away from homes, the kids, again it is planned to be the biggest slaughter house from Rochester to Cleveland.
Why was it covered-up. And yes it was 1 man who fought it away from his Subway Shop on William Street, NO homes close by. Lackawanna has hundreds of families who live less than 1500 ft from it. Even the windmills have a 1500 ft boundary from Rt. 5! If the people who live close by say no they do not want it----who has the final say? The people who live there or the politicians? The boys will not even schedule a work session to discuss the pros and cons, I am still trying though. When one comes on Abbott how will you all feel?
Many of us feel our First Ward has been beat up enough by heavy industry. And who will be on rat patrol ? Fred? I bet he will never kill a cat again because he will need all he can get to eat the rats.
