not always the case. We can't put a absolute bandaid on this stuff. Proper evaluation is imperative.

True. Im just saying too many conform to the conventional with narrow minds. Mostly because they're too lazy or scared to consider lifestyle change. And the problem with that is eventually new rules are mandated and it affects others who dont need those rules. Then taxes are raised and innocent people are extorted who shouldnt have to pay for other peoples crap.

The best treatment is early intervention of occupational therapy. The best results is if a parent is also doing what the ot is at home. They put kids on a "sensory diet" which really has nothing to do with food. My son is a sensory seeker but has some high defenses towards certain things. He hates having his had dirty so we do shaving cream on a cookie sheet which makes his tactile defenses less defensive. He then doesn't get anxious over having his hands dirty. He also craves movement (sensory seeking) and looks for proprioceptive input in his joints. I have a few exercises we do and also have a ton of toys for him to get this input. Heavy work is also part of his diet, so I will have him carry a laundry basket or a bin with toys.

It's about being a detective with your children. My son craves cold sensations so 20 minutes outside in the snow makes a world of difference for him, so does ice skating. Many children with spd probably couldn't ice skate but my son's very coordinated for the most part. Some children it effects there coordination, they walk into doors and such. The vestibular sense.

We don't realize it but there are more senses than the top 5.

That is sooo true. A neighbor asked me for some help about her son, she thinks he has adhd. I gave her the name and number of a specialist at children's who deals with developmental issues and told her she should also contact an ot to have a sensory profile done with him. I told her she should look into some dietary changes, the kid is 6 and drinks caffeinated beverages and eats a ton of junk. They didn't take my advice and medicated him, the medication didn't work and they still haven't tried dietary changes.

I am not saying my children have a perfect diet, they eat a combination of junk and healthy, but my children do not drink pop or any caffeine beverages. They don't need pop.

I think many do and always have, its just not/wasnt mentioned or explored as perhaps it should have been in fear of being shunned or bullied. Just look at what happened to people 100's of yrs ago delared as witches for unknowingly eating "Ergot".

Maybe its because civil domestication is just too domesticated.

one that takes time and effort and knowledge to help your child. I admire people who do that. It is called laziness when parents go straight to the meds.

I admire your dedication good luck Demesticated.

I don't know if it's always laziness or if many parents just don't know what else to do. I notice with parents with children who are just a little bit older than me they didn't have the resources and information available when there children were my age. They ended up medicating there children at an older age because the behaviors were so out of control, they did it along with sensory therapy and diet changes, eventually the child was taken off meds. They couldn't do the diet change without the meds or something (i don't know the whole story).

It's amazing in 10 years time how much more information we have. People have been studying spd for 30 some years yet so many people were unaware of it.
