What does modern GUI mean? you mean different. I have countless clients that use their computers as tools for one or two functions. There is absolutely no need for cloud anything or a "modern GUI" for the purpose of what they use their computers for.
Unfortunately it is all about marketing. Cloud storage and touch screens are all the rage. I was fine with DOS 6.1.

    Me too +1 to DOS

Cloud storage is great. I share my work with my partner who lives in Chicago on Google Docs, where she can access and modify my business files. How's that a bad thing?? I HAD A touch Screen laptop. Never used the touch screen. Seemed pointless

XP was actually a brilliant OS. however it soffured from a bug I discovered which never got fixed.

    win95, 98, 98se, 2K,XP, like Vista, 7, and im sure 8, suffers

that is, the OS doesnt always install properly. this becomes apparent with in a week. errors, sluggishness, ect..

reinstalling the OS fixes these issues. as far as XP it ussualy took 2x to get the OS to install correctly. I found a benchmark that would point out the bad install, 3dmark2001. if it got less than 120FPS during the first bench, the OS was installed improperly.

Unfortunately that benchmark doesnt work on win7, so its a 'try and see' deal.

hipkat? Do you make up stuff as you go along? I think I reloaded win XP on my home once over 8 years or so because I upgraded the hard drive. Could have cloned it but reloaded it instead. Same went for my work machine before I moved to windows 7. I have clients who haven't reloaded their machines since the day they purchased them and they ran fine.

And as your modern desktop goes it is very cluttered.

    Question XP will not Hide

What is the main software that you are using, also most of the reasons Microsoft stops supporting Operating systems is for guess what $$$$$$$$$$$$$. The most security issue with Microsoft is Internet Explorer and old office.
I still use XP Pro with OPENDNS DNSCrypt also for Browser Comodo Dragon, also a free VPN like VPNReactor and SecurityKISS Tunnel. The Office can be replaced with free Kingsoft Office, for Email Mozilla Thunderbird it looks for spam and other junk. Make sure all of your Virus and software like Advanced Systemcare is looked at daily.
    Any questions let me know.

Windows 8 is going to start behaving a little more like Windows 7, but that doesn't mean Microsoft is giving up on the idea of a tablet-friendly operating system.

MS is following a similar path Apple has taken. a shame if you ask me.

Apple uses the same OS on both iphone and ipad, personally i think the ipad needs its own os.

MS on the otherhand is trying to merge windows phones with desktop pcs.

    utter failure.

They're trying to emulate Google, which works and syncs across different platforms

I'm going with an HP i7 processor, 12 gig, 1T, you build your own online with what you want, etc. I did put in Win 8.1, added a 23" LED screen, it should be interesting, I'm going the install a free "Word" system for office stuff for my wife, etc. Plus 3 year "in home" service if anything goes wrong!!
