Flight 370 passenger's relative: 'All lives are lost'

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down in the southern Indian Ocean, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Monday, citing a new analysis of satellite data by a British satellite company and accident investigators.

A relative of a missing passenger briefed by the airline in Beijing said, "They have told us all lives are lost."

While the announcement appeared to end hopes of finding survivors more than two weeks after the flight vanished, it left many key questions unanswered, including what went wrong aboard the Beijing-bound airliner and the location of its wreckage in the deep, wild waters of the Indian Ocean.

No cell service in the middle of the ocean.

Cell phones dropped in a toilet stop working. I don't think cell phones at the bottom of the ocean are going to be much use ...

just wondering. another thought is why can't the information the black boxes collect be broadcast via satellite back to a main computer. they could instantly have the data instead off searching for weeks

Now thats a good idear. There could be some privacy issues if Government Inc harvested the data, but if the individual airlines did it, then it would be very helpful in a situation like this.

Physics. Radio waves can only penetrate into ocean water so far.

ELF transmission would probably be the only valid method for this type of transmission. The technology is expensive and only used I believe by Russia and the US military for submarine communications.

But if the data is being transmitted back to a database in real time then receiving signals underwater is really not needed. The data base on land should give you a pin point location of where the plane entered the water.

That is, unless they include an "off" switch like they put on the transponder.

just seemed like the black box was old 50's and 60's tech. real time recording can not be to expensive per flight since the planes already have communication to a base on board

Anything can be done. At a cost. Real time recording would also probably have failure points. Black Boxes would then still need to be used as a backup measure.

It all comes down to how much are you willing to pay for a plane ticket.
