This letter is in response to a writer's opinion published May 24 titled, "We must learn to live within our means." The opinion contains gross generalizations and specific suggestions that are destructive in their position.
His generalizations about the education field are especially disturbing in light of the crumbling state aid and support for children and schools in need. How offensive it is that one would assume that taking away entitlements from teachers and disabling education for young learners is the answer to the state budget crisis. Nothing could be further from the truth. Education and the teachers who drive education are the basis for creating a sound foundation for the future taxpayers and a successful work force that will be necessary to maintain a state that can support itself in the future. The writer holds a narrow view of what events will need to occur to improve the state's budgetary woes.

If nothing else, give better support to our teachers and extend the educational opportunities provided for those who will live in this state. Otherwise, the costs will be paralyzing.
