Current one-way section will be returned to two-way traffic, linking Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus with Downtown Buffalo

Mayor Byron W. Brown and Congressman Brian Higgins today announced the start of construction to return two way traffic to the 700 Block of Main Street, which will open a critical section of Downtown Buffalo to the booming Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus to the north and the planned restoration of car traffic to Main Street south of West Tupper Street.

“I am pleased that the work to the 700 block of Main Street is beginning. This is an important step in returning cars to Main Street in Downtown Buffalo, which has been one of my goals since taking office,” said Mayor Brown. “Returning two-way traffic to the 700 Block of Main Street provides the necessary impetus to linking the dynamic development activity of the Medical Campus with the continuing growth of residential, cultural and commercial activity throughout downtown.”

The project was delayed for a few months because of a lawsuit between two of the bidding companies. During the delay, the City of Buffalo completed the State Environmental Quality Review, or SEQR process. Last week, work began on infrastructure and tree removal. All trees that were removed will be replaced after the road and utility work on the 700 block is completed.

“Returning two-way traffic to the 700 Block of Main Street opens up a critical link between our downtown core and the exciting investments taking place along the medical campus and the 800 block,” said Congressman Brian Higgins. “New access brings new activity to existing theaters, restaurants and businesses and new opportunities for mixed use economic development along Main Street in the immediate future.”

The area stretches from Goodell Street to Tupper. The work will continue through the fall and into the spring. The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2009; the total cost of this phase of the project is $2.4 million.
was brown confident president obama would be elected to pass a stimulus bill? it's unsaid where the money came from to begin the project. stimulus watch has the 700 block of main street listed. did brown take a gamble. begin construction and hope for obama to be elected. last summer the money sounded like it was secure from another source. will the stimulus be added to the project (now to total $4 million)?

did brown get a stimulus for a project already paid for?

The money was already there, it had been planned for six years now. Many of the projects you see on the stimulus proposal are projects that are about to occur with current funding in place, so they are not new.

This is what I've been trying to point out for the past couple weeks. Buffalo is not getting "new" money for much of these projects. They are swapping funds for projects that they have already funded in many cases. The reimbursement goes to Albany to balance the budget and keep the status quo.

twice as much? fed government paid for projects. albany gets a payback? shouldn't 700 block main street be $4 million?

The stimulus package was about being able to do projects now. basically posing for municipalities, How do we expand your current infrastructure projects? Most cities have a "real" 5-Year capital plan. Whereby, most of the planning and design work has been completed and whereby the only thing missing is the actual dollars for construction.

Unfortunately our mayor happens to be like Paterson, holding a job above his abilities. The city doesn't have a bona fide 5 year plan. It doesn't have any projects slated for construction past the current one, so they entered all the current projects so they would get something.

if we had a real mayor we'd have double or triple the projects being completed in the same time frame.

Now you know at least one more reason why we need to get this guy out of office.
