About time the seed catalogs showed up

    mail order catalogs

Years ago you would go to the general store and buy your seeds from a display like this:

    seed tray

    Card Seed Company
    50 West Main Street
    Fredonia, NY 14063
    Town of Pomfret

The building at 50 West Main was once that of the Card Seed Company. For further information and other seed companies in Fredonia, see The Packet Seed Companies of Fredonia, New York, 1834 to 1988 by Douglas H. Shepard (Darwin R. Barker Historical Museum, 2002).

Got all my super hots off to a good start!!!!

I like the avocado idea, not sure if I would be patient enough to wait a 3-4 years before fruiting!

    Some seeds are planted...

    This year I'll just use.

    seed starting soil
Same tray year after year... Cleaned the counter top and tray with hot water and a little bleach. Wiped the dust off the bulbs and made sure the 10 dollar timer still worked...

Now I just wait... 1/2 of these should be tomatoes... I haven't decided what else to start.

    seed tray covered

Now that I'm using the lights I moved the venus fly trap to give it a head start....

I gave it a dormant period and now it is starting to perk up...

last year had one flower stalk...this year there is at least 4 starting.. It does need to be transplanted...

Res, you better be careful. Your home and business may be under surveillance due to your hydroponics purchases.

A Kansas couple’s home was raided by police looking for marijuana plants several months after the man purchased hydroponics gardening equipment.
Police, who claimed to have had the house under surveillance for months, found only vegetables. Now the couple is suing in an effort to learn the basis
for the raid. Isn’t it time to end the phony war on drugs? http://personalliberty.com/2013/04/0...nce-drug-raid/

Well if the surveillance team was worth their salt they would just peek in the window

Check out how fast these are growing.

I'll transplant them this weekend into larger pots.

Seeing the weather was so nice today the little seedlings got sunshine. Sunshine is always better than artificial lighting.

Lettuce is way easy to grow under lights...

Just soil/water and light... and seeds.

Good soil gives the lettuce a good start.

Spring is going to be early. Lettuce should be able to go out early and the tomatoes should be fine in the pots until it is time to go outside

The tomato plants have excellent root structure and look good to go

They were both planted as deep as they could go into the bins

    Grassroots gardener

Excellent story in the Buffalo News

Grassroots gardener helps transform city neighborhoods

    By Scott Scanlon

    Refresh Editor

Susannah Barton works in the Tri-Main Building in downtown Buffalo, an architectural gem with steel beams, colorful corridors and eclectic gallery, office and light manufacturing space.

But truth be told, Barton would rather be working outdoors, especially this time of year.

Barton, 34, is a former commercial banking specialist who landed a master’s degree in urban planning at the University at Buffalo in late 2009 and became the first paid executive director of Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo, a nonprofit group that helps residents and neighborhood organizations operate nearly 70 community gardens across the city.
