When the state slashed funding for the Martin Luther King Jr. Park's new community Center Joyce Wilson, executive director/ chief executive officer, made the commitment to continue the project.
Joyce did so even though she no longer had a salary.
"If (the children) thought we were only here because we were getting paid, why would they listen to us?" said Wilson.
The newly refurbished Martin Luther King Jr. Park Casino opened Friday as The Parents Community Center. LP Ciminelli spearheaded the project with help from 13 local contractors who donated materials and labor.
