Jamestown and Chautauqua County are moving forward with a possible merger of the Jamestown Police Department with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department. The original proposal was made in January, 2007, and the parties involved are seeking a state grant to get to the "nitty gritty" details of such a move.

Chautauqua County is probably the leader among local governments in promoting realistic regionalism efforts. I said "realistic" because regionalism here is aimed at practical applications not on philosophy (ie, consolidation for the sake of consolidation as Kevin Gaughan proposes) or on self-serving empire building (Giambra's attempt to grab control of Buffalo patronage back in 2005).

There have been several regionalism initiatives discussed by the county legislature, among the most recent is the possibility of having the county replace local assessors with a county unit.
