Why don't the lawmakers use their money?

Niagara lawmakers seek grant of $1.7 million for tech park

    niagara economic grant

WHEATFIELD — Niagara County is seeking $1.7 million in state and federal money to pay for an entrance road and sewers in a farm field it has dubbed the Cambria Technology Park.
The Lockport Road field has been declared a “shovel-ready” site for high-tech industries.
It was dubbed a technology park in February, but despite that designation, much work is needed to get it ready for development, including a road into the field, sanitary sewers and a sewage pumping station.
The County Legislature’s Economic Development Committee voted last week to seek 50 percent of the project’s costs from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, and the other half from the state’s Regional Economic Development Council.

“If we get the EDA grant, it would be much easier to get the regional economic council to commit,” asserted Legislature Majority Leader Richard E. Updegrove, R-Lockport.

Do you think things through before you post them? So instead of applying for available funds from outside sources to fund this project, funds that if they don't go to Niagara County would go somewhere else like Westchester or Alabama, you want them to spend their own funds on it?

this is whats wrong with our state, we have to spend it so someone else can't, Everyone is fighting to get their share of the pot and no one is trying to reduce the size of the pot I have heard this for years. we have to dream up some worthless project here not because we need the project but so the money does not get spent somewhere else. those outside sources you mention happen to be taxes collected from use too. keep dreaming up government projects and watch the taxes go up

    Well said Gramps.

It's unfortunate that some posters use the screen name of Jeff Bridges and spout-off downright retarded comments. Probably a county employee, or some other form of bottom feeder.

These are taxes that were already collected, are budgeted and are going to be spent. A county has a duty to get they money that is out there, because that is money going into the local economy that isn't there now. How much in taxes do you think the Niagara County taxpayer would get back if their share of the state and federal funds were given back to them rather than being spent? Less than pennies. Are you the product of incest? That is the only thing that could explain your inability to type or grasp this.

so you argue like a 1st grader and call names real mature. if it is not spent then it could pay off debt or reduce the next tax. political greed is what drove so many New Yorker's south and will keep doing so. spend spend spend has reached a point of implosion . every little bit of spending we can prevent means more the private sector can spend to improve our economy. government spending just delays the final judgement and each delay makes the end worse. your spend spend spend attitude will drive another 4 or 5 million people out of our state. then who would pay all the government employers that are still here

I am thinking it through along as looking at past stupid spending mistakes our elected officials have made in NYS at the NET tax payers expense.

Does a connected developer in that area own the property where they want a road to no where to be built to an empty farm plot? Quick cash from a government grant to pay for some land they have to build a road on? Who is Cambria? The person who owns the farm land? If they want a road/sewers built let them pay for it. Has Cambria donated to Legislature Majority Leader Richard E. Updegrove? Follow the bribery.. opps.. I mean follow the money.

Where is Jim Ostrowski on this matter. Our government shouldn't be handing out grants to private business ventures.

The question is who is using the towns name to make their field sound like a good investment. technology covers many things. is this another field with a few gravel roads left after all the top soil is sold

Let us review what possible "honest" graft that can come from this.

Who owns the land where the "road to no where" would be built? Would some of that grant money be used to purchase that land or will it be donated for town use? How would that land be appraised for purchase? I can see someone pocketing a fair chunk of change on that one.

Who will get the contract to build the "road to no where"? It will provide jobs!!! That is one of those slug lines the elected officials like to throw out there... The counter to people who say we don't want this is "You are standing in the way of progress"... Not really. We are standing in the way of access to our pockets.

You type like a 1st grader. I, on the other hand, use punctuation and capitalize letters beginning sentences. My point, which you are clearly too dense to understand, is not whether the spending is worthwhile, but if it is wise for a County to seek outside funds for development projects rather than use from their own pool of dollars.

Who is Cambria? Haha, it is ridiculous how ignorant you are.
