Patchin - Yea or Nay ?

The excess time spent on discussing the new building in Boston was time well spent indeed, but we must now move on.

Some have expressed an opinion that the budget should be at least $2M - $3M, while others have said that $500K is far more realistic for a town of our size.

Most agree that the Emergency Squad is second to none.

Having the North Boston facility up to snuff and with the Boston upgrade in place, addressing whether or not to renew the Patchin contract is now the most popular topic on everyone’s heart.

The Highway Department is very efficiently operated. Wandering off topic and insulting them will only make you look pathetic.

Please remember, if you are going to be using the insurance rate angle when weighing in, you must provide your carrier and somebody here will be glad to offer a new agent and contact information.

You simply cannot say, “But surely my rates will go up.”

More importantly, using accusations of lies, corruption and such must be accompanied by actual references.

If you refer to lies, corruption and such and won’t respond when ordered will only make you look really pathetic.

You simply cannot say, “Joe (from down the road) told me that Fred lied to him.” That won’t be tolerated.

    Welcome friends

It isn’t really necessary to type out “Insurance Rate Angle” if you’ll be using it.

Just use IRA and we’ll know that you are requesting a new agent.

Airing differences, conflicts and resentments amongst departments is okay.

Getting feelings out is both healthy and productive and will help in the decision making process.

    Here are the two most opposed responses thus far;

Joe writes, “Nay - Don’t renew and I'm okay with $500K”.

……… Wow, that’s all you have to say Joe?

    And another from a fellow named Ritch who wrote;

Count me a yea and bump it up to $3M - no wait, make it $4M.

Whether we like them or not, all opinions matter.

Also, thank you for refraining from vulgar language so far.

    "Make no mistake:
Long accustomed to independence, volunteers resent outsiders — particularly politicians — telling them their business."

...... I'm still shocked by the ISO literature - now this ?

Without the serfs(outsiders) and politicians, where will the operating cash come from ?

"The fire service has gone through many phases. Do you remember the ISO craze?

Yes, how we embraced it. We drove through towns with red, white and blue bunting on our trucks. We sat in the hose beds with signs saying, “ISO is the way to go!” People cheered from their front yards and chanted, "ISO! ISO!" Children ran along the sidewalks in ISO T-shirts. Fire truck salesmen got rich. Gas was cheap. It was a euphoric time."

Will Wyatt isn't even from around here, so maybe his article doesn't matter. I did think his Firecycle 2000 was pretty cool though!

The Buffalo News article did make some good points both for and against mergers though and I'm not sure just where I stand.

You seem to be an expert on all this fire hall stuff. You must have been a volunteer firefighter previously?? Or did you never volunteer and just spend all your time criticizing everything that everyone else does.....Yeah, I thought so...When the town has to put in a paid department after everybody quits, you can be the Chief!!! There is nothing wrong with saving money when possible, even in the fire service. But the way you yoyos slam people and flaunt your arrogance, it just makes people sick to their stomach. If you are such an expert, why don't you join, like Slitter has suggested many times, to which you have never responded.

Thank you for the positive feedback. It’s good to know we’re on the same team.

We’re discussing whether or not we need a hall every two miles to keep the town efficiently and safely covered.

Personally, I’m liking the idea of one at each end, meeting in the middle and it sounds like we agree.

If after discussion, it was decided to not renew the Patchin contract, the memberships could be merged into North Boston & Boston.

Because of the vulgar, offensive language and aggressive attitudes of some of you and our philosophical differences, joining makes no sense.

If you don’t like my opinion, that’s okay and I still consider you a very, loyal & dear friend.

Did you get a chance to check out that Firecycle 2000 yet ?

"At Erie County Fire Wire, a Web site for firefighters, downsizing is the hottest topic.

"A lot of them [posters] are for it," said Mike Vanderlaan, the former North Carolina firefighter who runs the site.

Even the head of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association thinks consolidations are probably inevitable."

Isn't it comforting to know you're not alone and that there are other experts who agree with you too ?

Goodnight all - sleep well and stay safe!
