    If you were Sheriff...

What are the important issues any Sheriff should be concerned about/ dealing with or considering? Do you have suggestions for solutions?

Thank you for answering engaging in this dialogue. Safety is one of the main tenants of Law enforcement. But is there a point when "safety" becomes an infringement on people. The State mandates seat belts car seats and motorcycle helmets. What more specifically can be done...?

Make sure his deputies are enforcing the state's mandated infringements so that the people won't cause harm to themselves or others. Remember, as a law enforcement officer you are sworn to uphold the laws which are written by elected officials who were elected by the people, not the police!
Are you asking to give a detail of what is expected from the sheriff, and if so for how big of a county, is there a lock up involved with your answer also civil and court papers, etc. There are allot of details that goes into law enforcement and each level is different for what's expected. That being said the most important part of a sheriff's job is to make sure the citizen, staff, inmates all stay safe while being governed by him/her.

Most Law Enforcement organizations have become a tool for opression. Yes they are needed for the worst crimes but in the interim they become a tool for our politicians to harass and tax the public. In reality the police and sheriff departments write tickets to provide a source of revenue for our society that is turning extremely liberal to the point of socialism.

I think the cops deserve respect for the hardest jobs they do, but I don't know a single one who would stand up and refuse to write BS traffic tickets because they know it's being ordered for a revenue source.

The big question is: When push eventually gets to shove and civil unrest erupts because people have been taxed enough and had their civil liberties infringed upon to the point of revolt, which side will law enforcement take?

Remember that government can't take your liberties if they have no-one to force the public into compliance.

A police officer takes an oath and is sworn to uphold the laws to protect the people of the community they serve.
This has so many meaning that, I wonder why you just focus on the "hidden tax" of ticket writing; what about the other so called "hidden taxes" of costs of a simple form, or building codes, etc., (so numerous to express with this writing)? It's the elected officials who need to govern the will of the people and reduce spending and "hidden taxes" where possible. If a law enforcement officer were to be in a situation of protecting the "people-majority" .Vs a minority of self righteous people, including politicians, then I know that the police would protect the rights of these people in the majority!!

I know what you mean. I can go for a while on those topics. they get into some fundamental things. I am interested in running for the position of Sheriff.(not your jurisdiction) And want to tap into the heart of what the people think. one thought is that the Sheriff should encourage the deputies to use discretion wisely and not be beguiled by the bureaucrat fat cats that have an agenda.

Is this a true statement regarding corrections: The sheriff is not running a day care its a jail with punitive misssion. It's not meant to be a hotel. Also the Sheriff should seek programs, policies that encourage the inmate to see the error of their ways and desire to make personal changes in their life to be a contributer to society rather than a predator. inmates are to be treated with dignity and respect yet not coddled or priveleged.

This occurred in 1860, on the federal level. good men chose both ways. The veterans revolt after the WWI is another example of the government turning on it's citizens. WWI vets were cut down by federal 'police"

On the deputy level I find it hard to beleive that ALL are on the take and racist and follow boss hogg around to do his bidding for personal gain. In Seneca coutny some of the deps did that now the Sheriff and undersheriff are going to prison for it.

I am sorry i misunderstood your reply and gave a dumb answer. Enforcement of these infringements is usually coupled with discretion. A person may get stopped for the violation but the ticket may not be issued based on circumstance when the officer asks all the questions.

You know thats funny,I have been stopped a few times for speeding,I have always been a gentelman,Hands on the wheel untill the officer comes up to my window. When heasks for registration I always say its in the glove box.Always yes sir no sir,and I never get a warning> So excuse me if I aint a police lover. The last Ticket I was doing 66 in a 55 I paid $250.00 to the Town Judge who did me a big favor and reduced it down,no points just no money. Like I said I am 59 and when I was a kid I respected cops, not anymore.
