    Cowboy Cuomo versus the Indians

OK. Yesterday there was an article in the Buffalo News talking about how bad the NYS finances are. Today there is an article claiming that NYS is going after the Indians to collect taxes on Indian made cigarettes.

Since I can't believe anything I read in the News, does anyone know the real story?

    Senecas brace for seizure attempts
State refuses to confirm or deny reports of new cigarette tax enforcement plan

I truly believe they'll try it again, spend MORE money for police, etc than it's worth!

Do you have any source for this besides the Buffalo News. I don't believe anything that's printed in the Buffalo News.

What I found interesting in the article was this:

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo was traveling to Puerto Rico Friday to give a speech to New York Latino legislators and leaders. His administration in Albany was asked six times Friday to clarify its position on the cigarette dispute but did not.

Why travel to Puerto Rico to give a speech to New York leaders when you can do it in NYS?

Maybe NYS doesn't need the business.
I never said I had no idea about most of the things you said I said I had no idea about.

The Governor has often expressed his view that indian made cigarettes that are being sold to non-indians are taxable by the State. The operative question is when and how he will effectuate this policy. In early July the NYSP and the NYSDTF entered into the MOU below that was reported as unprecedented. Around this time there was a memo released from DTF that directed their agents to not actively pursue indian made cigarettes unless they are located off reservation and destined to an off-reservation point. There have also been intimations that any such act will be taken by the ATF rather than State Officers like here: http://www.atf.gov/press/releases/20...settlement.pdf
