Arrest 'imminent' in case of alleged ballot tampering

    Sheriff begins probe of ballots

An arrest is expected soon in an apparent case of tampering with absentee ballots at the Erie County Board of Elections, Undersheriff Mark N. Wipperman said this morning.

Following a full scale investigation by sheriff's investigators, Wipperman said detectives have narrowed suspects to a small list, all of whom work at the board.

"Several interviews have been conducted and some valuable evidence has been located and secured," he said. "The Sheriff's Office is confident that once the evidence is professionally analyzed, an arrest will be imminent."

The Buffalo News reported Tuesday that ballots already marked for Republican County Executive Chris Collins on either the GOP or Independence lines were reported in Lackawanna, and that elections officials were quizzing board employees for an explanation.

Democratic Elections Commissioner Dennis E. Ward and his Republican counterpart, Ralph M. Mohr, on Wednesday said they had concluded their internal inquiry surrounding at least 10 pre-marked ballots, and had referred the matter to the Sheriff's Office.

Mohr said today the probe has proven extensive, with five detectives and a crime scene investigator descending upon the board's West Eagle Street headquarters over the past two days.

"They took the employees into a separate room to talk to them; one guy for two hours," Mohr said, declining to identify the board worker.

He said he and Ward were also extensively interviewed by investigators to determine board procedures.

Ward said earlier this week that board officials were concerned about the possibility of anyone tampering with official ballots, though he noted that mistakes have occurred in the past when an employee may have accidentally "scooped up" test ballots and distributed them in the mail. But he said Wednesday that appeared unlikely.

Mohr added the situation is puzzling because the handful of bipartisan employees who had access to the ballots as they were prepared for mailing were in each other's presence, and any tampering attempt would have been noticed. He said that neither political campaign had access to the ballots and that the small number in question — 10 out of approximately 10,000 — could make virtually no difference in the outcome of the election.

Wipperman emphasized that neither the campaign of Collins or Democrat Mark C. Poloncarz are involved in the case.

"The suspect [or suspects] acted on their own accord," he said.

FYI: Every state/federal campaign sends their people to film candidates at rallies etc. to see if they mess up. Ask anyone whoever ran a state or federal campaign. If they tell you otherwise they are lying. The sound bite for the breaking news for a gaffe is priceless.

maybe you are one of the priveleged that saw the entire vidoe, not just the reaction of davis. it sure appears jack was at least highly provoked. are you saying what mallia did was right? i'm sure mallia wasn't whisked out of town right after it happened, and then fired from the staff. davis was attacked in an inappropriate way.

Provoked or not there are several other politicians everyday Democrat and Republican who have to deal with the media and people in general even if they don't like it. The thing is not one of them ever snap and start hitting people. Who cares anyways its old news. Mallia was fired. If somebody else wants to hire him so be it.

    More info from another blog:
There is a suspect (s). However, while the name is out there the suspect is presumed innocent. I do not know the suspect's name. Again, just admit your guilt (come clean) & save yourself some jail time. Don't be like Poloncarz your candidate, "stupid is as stupid does". ...

"Mr. Poloncarz's irrational zeal to blame others before a full investigation commenced clearly raises serious questions regarding his level of involvement and his ham-handed efforts to pin this on others. His rush to judgment raises serious questions about his integrity and participation. What did Poloncarz know and when did he know it?" Collins Campaign

Breaking News: Sources say an arrest is imminent in the ballot tampering investigation at the BOE. Ten ballots were sent to absentees with the Collins box checked. Our sources say a Democrat (s) is responsible, possibly a Lackawanna Democratic, attempting to embarrass the Collins campaign. Dark Vader is from Lackawanna. He also has taken the Collins campaign to task over the matter.

    Interesting to say the least.

Attacked with what? Asking a question he wanted an answer to? Like others don't send political hacks to jeer and harass candidates? Just read the comments in the Buffalo News everytime there is a Collins or Poloncarz article. Same political hacks bashing Collins. LOL

They may be one in the same. There are only two people considered to have possibly done it and Mallia is one of them.

Maybe I'm missing something here. What in God's name would either camp gain by tampering with those ballots? 10 votes? A chance at making the other side look corrupt? I'm sure neither candidate was involved in such a act of stupidity. I bet whoever is behind it regrets it dearly as I'm sure it's gonna cost them their job and reputation.

It is stupid and it will cost them a lot more than their job and reputation. Can you say jail time!
