Maple trees infected with tree killing fungus

I found this out thruogh a third party, that the maple trees which are NOW losing their leaves enmass, are NOT losing their leaves due to the 'hot weather' but are actually infected with a fungus. A guy I know had has leaves tested by a lab to find out what was all over the leaf, came back as some sort of fungus. Basically your supposed to pick up the leaves asap, and then after the first front spray the ground, and then in the spring, when the tree is budding, spray the tree.

Thing is, its only one type of tree losing its leaves, and in Amherst and Williamsville, it is VERY wide spread.

Untreated, it is suggested the fungus will kill the tree with in 5 years.

"If it is going to kill trees, it will take years," said Dr. George Hudler, associate professor of plant pathology at Cornell University in Ithaca, who has been tracking the disease. "We have been watching it carefully for six years or so and haven't seen any die yet."

I have seen the fungus for at least 7-8 years, hasn't killed a tree yet. However, the leaves don't make it to fall colors which is sad. The fungus is very widespread. In the city nearly every maple is infected (I haven't seen one that is healthy yet). Spraying is too expensive and given current infection rates you would have to do it yearly.

I noticed it this year. WBEN had a sound bite the other day, apparently the morning news people interviewed the guy that has the Saturday plant show and he said it's not something to worry about

I've had the black spotted leafs on my maple tree that the town owns in the front of the house for about 8 or 9 years. The 4 maples in the back of the house don't have it.
