    Tops dumps Martin's brand

Tops Markets LLC has decided to that four area Martin's Super Food Stores will revert to the Tops moniker.

The conversion should be completed by early February.

The switch was predicted in early December when Morgan Stanley Private Equity acquired the Tops supermarket chain from Royal Ahold. At the time, Frank Curci, Tops' recently named chief operating officer, said he wanted to bring the Martin's outlets under the Tops banner.

I never understood the Martins branding anyway. Does anyone know why Tops thought it would be a success?

Was an attempt to better compete with Wegmans and Walmart. It didn't work because they failed to deliver competetive prices and the services did not compare to Wegmans. Martins was still Tops with a different name-- both run by the same morons who did nothing but drive shoppers to Wegmans and Walmart.
